‘People say – and I’m quite willing to believe it – that it’s difficult to know oneself – but it’s not easy to paint oneself either.’

In September 1889, Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about this self-portrait, painted in Saint-Rémy after a period of mental health struggles. He described himself as ‘thin, pale as a devil’, with ‘dark violet blue’ tones, a ‘whiteish’ head and orange hair. Long before selfies, Van Gogh was exploring self-image – not through a camera, but through paint, colour and a remarkably honest look at himself.

Look closely. You can almost feel the swirls 🌀 Van Gogh used impasto, applying paint thickly so each brushstroke remains visible. He began exploring this technique in Paris (1886–1888), influenced by the Impressionists.
By the time he painted ‘The Starry Night’ in Saint-Rémy, his impasto became more pronounced and expressive.

Today, we remember Vincent van Gogh, who passed away 136 years ago.
Jo missed her husband Theo, Vincent's brother, who died six months after Vincent. She read their letters and recognized the feeling of feeling abandoned and alone.

Grief touches everyone at some point in life. It can feel isolating, like walking through a storm alone — just as Jo described. But grief is also a thread that connects us. A quiet language we all, at some point, come to understand.
