1. In 2017, the Supreme Court’s K.S. Puttaswamy v. Union of India judgment recognised privacy as a fundamental right.

2. In 2018, Kamal Nath, then Madhya Pradesh Congress chief, challenged the ECI over electoral rolls being provided as image PDFs instead of searchable text files.

3. The ECI raised concerns about voter privacy, profiling & data mining. The SC held that the Election Manual did not require the ECI to provide searchable PDFs. Justice A.K. Sikri also observed that the petitioner could convert the publicly available image PDFs into searchable format through his own efforts. (Read this again & again)

Wanna see a real example of voter privacy being breached?
