I am sure you will have experienced kitchen theatre. Someone stands at the bench, nose lifted, sniffing the air like a search-and-rescue dog. Something is wrong. And yet the toaster keeps toasting, because nobody wanted to pull the lever early.

That’s the trap. You can smell the smoke and still serve the toast.

The fix costs nothing but discipline: the instant you smell it, look. Instead, most people reach for the butter — a generous spread, edge to edge, because a golden coat hides a multitude of sins. That’s production dressed up as thinking. You haven’t fixed the toast, you’ve just made it harder to see that you didn’t.

Then you cut it. Black straight through. And you eat it anyway, telling yourself: next time.

The truth? If you’d trusted the first smell, you’d already have known.
