The public needs to see more fact sheets like this one by @CAPublicHealth on how to best protect yourself from smoke produced from burning vegetation. It explains the need to use elastomeric respirators equipped with P100 & organic vapor filters in order to be protected from the harmful vapors produced.

Unfortunately, homes, businesses, vehicles & other things that have burned down have produced harmful gases that causes cancer, heart damage, brain damage, lung damage & pregnancy issues.

Why is the government not alerting the public or even first responders about anything but N95s? Even people like @DrEricDing are absent in the discussion on needing to quickly upgrade protections.

We need people like @SenSanders @SenWarren to speak up & pressure the Administration to ensure the federal government immediately distribute their stockpiles of elastomeric respirators to those fighting the fire in LA but only having N95s or lower protections.

The worst part of the situation is the Biden Administration knows full well the importance of upgrading protections from N95s to elastomeric respirators with multi gas filters.

They explain themselves the significant reduction in occupational illnesses that occur when those fighting forest fires are upgraded to elastomerics. Unfortunately with the LA wildfires, a lot more than just firefighters are exposed to dangerous levels of smoke & could greatly benefit from knowing to consider far better options that they can pick up at most hardware stores or Amazon.

Unless we make sure the 10,000+ firefighters & those closest to the fires have proper protections against the smoke, we will be facing another situation like 9/11 where a single event causes widespread diseases among firefighters.

A couple of people that passed had disabilities. My Uber driver even told me that there's not enough drivers to help evacuate wheelchair users. When we say that Disabled people are one of the most vulnerable in crisis, listen to us and include us in emergency planning.
