该文指出，几乎没有迹象表明中国兑现了今年早些时候特朗普在北京与习近平会面时做出的大幅增加购买美国农产品的承诺。

该文表示，虽然美国举行盛大仪式隆重迎接习近平访美，但除贸易战休战协议外，“几乎看不到取得其他政策成果的迹象”。

该文还提到，特朗普曾对奥巴马政府接待习近平做出批评，但此次他似乎格外专注于扮演东道主而非竞争对手的角色。

该文引用俄勒冈州民主党参议员罗恩·怀登的话说：“中国几乎违背了它做出的所有贸易承诺，作为回报，特朗普却为习近平主席铺上了红毯。没有证据表明特朗普正在利用这个机会反击从强迫劳动到国家补贴这些损害我们工人和企业利益的中国政府政策。唐纳德·特朗普正在向中国大肆让步，却让美国家庭来买单。”

此外，早在9月8日《华尔街日报》就提到，习近平可能在本次访美过程中再次援引“修昔底德陷阱”这一说法。

9月24日，习近平在刚抵达美国不久就警告说，两国应避免“修昔底德陷阱”（指新兴大国和老牌强国之间很可能会走向战争）。习近平说：“中美不必讳言竞争，但竞争应该是良性的，有边界的，应该是你追我赶的赛跑，而不是你输我赢的角斗。中美双方必须守住不冲突、不对抗的底线。”

许成钢在接受《华尔街日报》采访时表示，接受“修昔底德陷阱”这种叙事，等于允许一个向外扩张的党国被当成普通竞争者。
