Today at the Kyrgyz National Philharmonic Hall in Bishkek, seven projects were honoured with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for addressing climate risk, preserving cultural heritage and providing affordable housing.

The winners will share $1 million, with projects ranging from flood-resistant bamboo homes that can be relocated when rivers shift, to community-led restoration of urban heritage, and a community centre that transforms abandoned oil company ruins into lively public space.

The ceremony was presided over by His Highness the Aga Khan and His Excellency Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

“This Award clearly demonstrates that architecture is not a display of wealth, but a necessity and a responsibility to future generations,” said His Excellency Adylbek Kasymaliev.

“Great architecture has the power to answer directly to the most acute development challenges, and to create the inclusive, safe, dignified world that we want for everyone,” said His Highness the Aga Khan.

Established by His late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV in 1977, the Award is unique in recognising projects that combine design excellence with improved quality of life. Over 130 projects have been honoured across 16 triennial cycles, selected by an independent Master Jury.

This year’s ceremony also marked 25 years of AKDN’s partnership with the Kyrgyz Republic, celebrated with a commemorative postage stamp and recognition of initiatives in education, health, finance and culture benefiting more than 520,000 people.
