Don't confuse a theme with a subject. A subject of a story is a topic which is the basis for a story; a theme is an idea about the subject. For example, one of Frankenstein's subjects is science. It has several themes, however, including man vs. nature, or rebirth.

Frankenstein is also an epistolary novel. An epistolary novel is a story written as a series of documents, usually letters (epistles). However, diary entries, newspaper clippings and other documents can also be used. Greek word ἐπιστολή [epistolē], meaning 'a letter.'

A frame story is a literary technique that is often described as “a story within a story.” Frankenstein actually has multiple framed narratives. First, Robert writes letters to his sister the story told to him by Victor; then, Victor's story contains the creature's story

Conflict
4 basic conflicts:
Person v Person: A problem between characters
Person v Self: A problem within a character’s own mind
Person v Society: A problem of society, school, the law, or some tradition
Person v Nature: A problem of element of nature--a storm, a flood, etc.

A literary element is a part of narrative fiction—a necessary feature of stories and storytelling.

Tall Tale
A humorous, exaggerated story often based on the life of a real person. The exaggerations build until the character has superhuman powers.

Example: Paul Bunyan is an example of a character in a tall tale.

A literary form, sometimes called a genre, is a category of literature. The forms can be defined by their technique, tone, content, or  length. The distinctions between genres and forms are flexible.

Using words that imitate sounds.

Allusion
A reference to a well-known person, artwork, event, or piece of writing used to add meaning to a story through intertextuality

Faulkner’s book The Sound and the Fury is from lines in Macbeth: “it is a tale/Told by an idiot/full of sound and fury,/Signifying nothing.”

Alliteration
The repetition of initial consonant sounds to emphasize and connect words, to create an effect through sound

Device--used by writers to convey their messages. When used well, literary devices help readers to appreciate and analyze a piece of writing.
