It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed: He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should either utter good words or better keep silence; and he who believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbour with kindness and he who believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his guest.

Why Muslims Do Not Say “Merry Christmas”

Christmas is a religious celebration rooted in beliefs that Islam does not affirm, particularly the idea that Jesus (peace be upon him) is divine or the son of God. As Muslims we deeply honour Jesus as a noble prophet and messenger of God, (In fact a muslim can't remain muslim if he doesn't believe in Jesus).

Islam maintains that worship belongs to God alone. For this reason, congratulating a religious festival is often understood as endorsing the beliefs behind it, even if that endorsement is unintentional.

At the same time, Islam makes a clear distinction between theological disagreement and human kindness. Muslims are commanded to be respectful, just, and compassionate toward people of all faiths. Good character and peaceful coexistence are Islamic obligations. However, kindness does not require affirming religious beliefs or celebrations that contradict one’s own faith.

To understand this logically, consider this example:
If someone were to hold a celebration, let’s say a celebration meant to insult your mother, or something you hold deeply sacred. I am sure you would not even remain polite and respectful, let alone go ahead and congratulate those participating in the celebration. You would frame that stance as integrity and loyalty to what you know to be true and rightly so!

However in Islam, you are instructed to remain respectful towards other faiths, even if their celebrations are antithetical to the core teachings of the Islamic faith but without validating or participating in them.

This position is about faith consistency and loyalty to God, not animosity. It represents a careful balance between maintaining clarity in belief and upholding dignity in human relations.
