Ohio State beat the absolute crap out of Tennessee tonight.
My takeaways moving forward:
1) Heupel is still the guy. I don’t think some of you are considering that UT lost to Georgia State five years ago. We’re a 10+ win team every year now.
2) The fanbase is the best in the country. Filled up Ohio Stadium like no visiting team in the history of the sport.
3) Throw away the current portal approach. 2-3 quality starters (McCoy, Kitselman, Moi) doesn’t cut it in modern college football if you’re only going to bring in recruiting classes in the 10-15 range. Should be looking to add at least two WRs, one IOL, one OT, two LBs, and a S.
4) You’ve got to find a way to break the bank and consistently be in the 5-9 range every single year recruiting. The 2026 class is the golden opportunity. You’ve got a psychotic talent (Faizon Brandon) firmly committed, and you’ve got a first-rounder protecting his blindside. Pour in the resources. Get a couple stud WRs. Get some dogs on defense. Get some hogs up front to play alongside Sanders. Wins on the recruiting trail go a LONG way.
5) I would gauge interest behind the scenes on both coordinator positions. If you can upgrade from Banks and Halzle, don’t hesitate.
6) Nico met reasonable expectations this year given the hand he was dealt. Problem is the hand was Ace-high. Give the kid a straight draw next year.
7) I think Sampson returns. Loaded RB draft class. That’s big. Really bummed he couldn’t go in the first half.
8) Heupel is an innovator. He’s got to go back to the drawing board for big road games. When he can’t go tempo and has to go silent count, playcalling is far too discombobulated. He’s got to get more creative in those instances. Improved personnel (see 3 and 4 above) will help, but I’d love to see more pre-snap motion + QB under center on O as well as exotic blitz packages + less soft zone on D.
9) UT is close. It doesn’t look like it tonight. It didn’t look like it at UGA. They’re 6-10 pieces from being capable of going on a run. Make that up on the recruiting trail and take advantage of the transfer portal.
10) The university as a whole is in the best spot it’s been in my lifetime. We’re coming off a baseball national championship, the basketball team is ranked #1 in the country, the women’s basketball team is undefeated, the list goes on…it’s still a damn good time to be a Tennessee fan.
11) Invest at tackle and WR. When we had Wright, Hyatt, Tillman, this offense lit it UP. Now we’ve got good run-blocking tackles who are poor in pass protection, and WRs who 1) can’t win at the catchpoint, and/or 2) can’t create after the catch. Tonight, you played talented edge rushers and corners; the tackles couldn’t hold up and the WRs couldn’t get open. That can’t happen for a Heupel team.
I have been through the wringer pulling for this program. Tonight can go one of two ways.
Option #1 is sulking and using it as an excuse to prove that you are too far from competing for a national championship.
Option #2 is using it as a springboard to motivate donors, facilitate deals, showcase opportunity for recruits, and inspire positive change as far as your staff goes.
If UT chooses the latter, we’re in for a fun ride, and there’s a national championship on the horizon in the next 5 years. #GBO
Christian Moore is being promoted to double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas.
His stint in single-A was 2 games. He slashed .545/.583/1.091 in 11 AB with 2 doubles and a home run.
Couldn’t be happier for my colleague and friend Tony Vitello. Great guy, great staff, great group of players. And….its a great day to be a Tennessee Vol!!! @Vol_Baseball#GBO🍊
