Today I mourn the loss of Professor Amin Mughal in London. Since my days as a student at Cambridge in the 1980s he was a mentor and a guide. Whether it was reading political philosophy or poetry and literature he was the kind spirit holding my hand.
I last met him last summer. Nadir Cheema, his loving care-giver and contact with us for decades, and I walked him to his favourite watering hole near his retirement home. His mind was buzzing with new thoughts about the elusiveness of democracy. I told him we would succeed.
The summer of 1989 that I spent working for him in London in the newspaper section he was editing has remained a period etched in magic in my mind. After work we would sit with other friends for hours dreaming. His group consisted of poets and philanderers _ free spirits _ who like himself had suffered the brutality of the Zia martial law. They rarely talked about the dungeons of the Lahore Fort where many of them had suffered the stripping away of their dignity.
He had been involved in the quest for human liberation since own college days in Sialkot in the early 1950s. He would talk about his mentors in journalism: giants like Faiz Sahib, Mazhar Ali Khan, IA Rehman. His intellectual kindred spirit was Professor Manzoor. He would recall his work with trade unions during the Ayub martial law and his arrest and later expulsion from his teaching position. Undeterred, he got together with colleagues similarly ousted to form the Sangat Shah Husain, an educational institute that upheld human values and the unrestrained joy of the mother tongue of the Punjab.
After facing the Zia dungeons he had came to England in the mid 1980s and never once went back. I asked him why he wouldnt ever go back. He said he couldn’t. I put it down to self-respect. As his friends and comrades passed he mourned each loss with dignity and continued to make time for the company of those to whom he meant so much. Rest in peace dear Amin Sahib.
Pakistan today stands at the centre of a rapidly realigning world order. Moments like this are not merely achievements; they are openings. The image Pakistan has acquired in this short span of time is one that states often spend decades building.

"Well guys, you're gonna have to learn his f*cking name now."
I went on a rant at the Zohran Mamdani event last night, against billionaires who spent millions to try and stop a guy whose name they refuse to correctly pronounce.

NEW: NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani challenges President Trump in his victory speech:
“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants. And as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”
“So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
First day at IQSA. Amazing day, the highlight of which was Dr Ahmad Al-Jallad’s keynote lecture on the Qur’an in light of 1500 years of pre-Islamic Arabian epigraphy. The recent developments in this field are so incredibly exciting and only seem to be the beginning.
This conference feels like my version of Glastonbury or Coachella. I spent the day fangirling whenever I spotted an academic whose work I had read or watched, and becoming completely tongue tied whenever I had to speak to anyone.

@avtansa I am wondering is there any relationship with Lohana caste/tribe with the city? Though if my memory serves well Lohana were mostly gujrati and sindhis.

It is with great sadness the family of John Pilger announce he died yesterday 30 December 2023 in London aged 84. His journalism and documentaries were celebrated around the world, but to his family he was simply the most amazing and loved Dad, Grandad and partner. Rest In Peace.
Many in the US believe that Latin American migrants are prone to crime.
Spain has had a good bit of immigration over the last few decades, so it allows us to test this theory in a different cultural context. A 2012 paper looked at crime rates for immigrant groups of different origins from 2000 to 2006, and finds that those from Ecuador and Peru have the lowest murder rates adjusted for age, even below Chinese!
Ecuadorian, Colombian, and Peruvian migrants also have lower arrest rates for burglary and battery than migrants from the UK, although Chinese are the lowest in every category except murder.
In the case of Ecuadorians, what's really impressive is that they have tended to be less educated. In the mid-2000s, only 60% of Ecuadorians in Spain had at least some secondary (i.e., high school) education.
The authors argue that Latin American migrants have contributed to keeping the crime rate from rising in Spain, the way it has risen in other European countries.
They write that "our result is fully consistent with the evidence for the United States regarding Mexican immigrants (known as the Latino Paradox), where immigration from Mexico has lowered crime rates in some areas." This can happen to a certain extent even in a low-crime country like Spain.
