Is M23 a Congolese armed group or rather a thinly veiled proxy for a conventional interstate war? Nice rundown by @ryanmofarrell.
Meanwhile, M23/RDF is also sophisticated fiscal extraction machine, which goes way beyond minerals--full report, maps and data out later this week.
On August 28, 2013, on the hills of Kibati near Goma, Tanzanian Major Khatibu Shaaban Mshindo was killed by M23 fire. He left behind a widow and three children.
That same day, his fellow #Tanzanian soldier Hugo Munga was seriously wounded by mortar shrapnel at Munigi. Evacuated to South Africa, he died of his injuries on September 18. On October 27, a third Tanzanian soldier was killed fighting the M23 in Kiwanja.
These men served in MONUSCO’s Force Intervention Brigade, made up of Tanzanian, South African and Malawian troops. They had left their countries and families to fight alongside the Congolese army against the Rwanda-backed #M23. They came to defend Congo, then led by President Joseph Kabila.
Thirteen years later, the widows, orphans and families of those soldiers are watching from their home countries as that very same Joseph Kabila takes charge of a new political-military coalition alongside the leaders of the very same M23, still backed by Rwanda.
What a cruel irony of history! Men gave their lives helping Joseph Kabila defend Congo against a rebellion whose leaders he has now chosen to join.
And you expect this country to continue shielding, protecting and guaranteeing impunity to such a man?
What are we supposed to tell the families of those soldiers? That their husbands, fathers and sons died defending a country whose former president has now chosen to stand alongside the very people who killed them?
Some political contradictions become moral tragedies. This is one of them.
Sylvanus Olympio was shot on January 13, 1963. He was two days away from pulling Togo out of the CFA franc, when the imperialists struck.
The story that gets told is simple. A group of Togolese soldiers, led by Sergeant Étienne Eyadéma, stormed the presidential residence in Lomé. Olympio fled, hid in a car outside the US embassy, and was found and shot at the gate. Eyadéma admitted it: "He could not stay there. There would have been demonstrations. He would not move. I shot him" .
That is the version that fits the official record. It is also incomplete.
Olympio was not killed over a military pay dispute, though that is the trigger the soldiers used. He was killed because he was about to sign Togo's withdrawal from the CFA franc zone and launch a national currency backed by the Deutsche Mark. He had already founded the Banque Centrale du Togo in 1962. The agreement was days from being signed .
France had reasons to want him gone. De Gaulle's Africa advisor, Jacques Foccart, said it plainly after Olympio's death: "Sylvanus Olympio was not one of our friends" . The French ambassador in Lomé knew the coup plotters personally. They were former French army soldiers. France opposed an independent investigation into the assassination .
After Olympio was killed, his brother-in-law Nicolas Grunitzky was installed as president. He immediately abandoned the national currency plan and signed cooperation agreements reaffirming Togo's use of the CFA franc. The currency Olympio died trying to leave is still in use today .
The scholarship is careful. Historians like Skinner and Glasman argue the coup was rooted in the discontent of ex-French soldiers Olympio refused to integrate into Togo's tiny army. The monetary story is "an underlying factor," not the single bullet . But the timing is hard to ignore. Olympio was killed while negotiating monetary independence. The negotiations ended with his death. Togo stayed in the franc zone.
His brother-in-law took power. The man who pulled the trigger, Eyadéma, ruled Togo for 38 years after overthrowing Grunitzky in 1967.
Olympio's chair at the founding of the OAU in May 1963 was left empty. It was meant to be a warning. It became a template .

Brig. Gen. Mwita Marwa was a key Tanzanian commander who led the 208th Brigade of TPDF during the Uganda–Tanzania War. His forces cut off key supply lines, such as the Entebbe Road resulting in the final fall of Kampala that led to the overthrow of Idi Amin. This is not a movie.
🔴 In 2006 Moscow, an intelligence war between British and Russian intelligence services led to the exposure of British diplomats.
The latest round in the intelligence battle between MI6 and the FSB involved a seemingly ordinary rock left on a Moscow street. British intelligence had combined the classic “dead drop” method with technology to avoid detection by Russian security services.
From the outside, it looked like an ordinary rock. Inside, however, it contained an electronic system consisting of a battery, transmitter and receiver. A contact would pass by the rock and use the device to transfer data. MI6-linked diplomats would later visit the same location and retrieve the data through a brief wireless connection.
This eliminated the need for direct contact between the intelligence officer and the source. There were no document exchanges and no face-to-face meetings—just an intelligence operation carried out through a rock.
However, the FSB reportedly detected the system and monitored it for an extended period. Russian security services also recorded activity around the rock using hidden cameras.
The footage was later broadcast on Russian state television, exposing four British embassy diplomats by name: Marc Doe, Paul Crompton, Christopher Pirt and Andrew Fleming.
The footage showed MI6-linked diplomats passing by the rock, with some stopping and others removing it from its position.
Britain denied the allegations. The diplomats were not arrested and, due to their diplomatic status, were instead publicly exposed by the FSB.
The Russian source who had been providing information to the British was subsequently detained.
