This pic is from St Anne’s Indian Residential School in Fort Albany. In the basement was an electric chair that was used to terrorize children. Many of the survivors are still trying to access their records in order to settle their case. @Pontifex, you have these records.
The "few wrongdoers" defence is exploited by institutions perpetrating atrocities to shield themselves from meaningful accountability. These 1907 headlines show that many of the child deaths in the "schools" were preventable- the Church and gov't chose not to save their lives.
#papalapology My thoughts are with Survivors who heard the apology from the Pope yesterday. But despite this historic apology, the Holy Father’s statement ignores the full role of the Church in the Residential School system.
My favorite prayer says: "For as long as space endures, And for as long as living beings remain, Until then may I too abide, To dispel the misery of the world." And, in trying to fulfill that aspiration, I feel my life has been of some benefit.
In an foreboding photograph, a Roman Catholic priest holds up a crucifix toward a huddled group of indigenous children newly arrived at St. Anne’s (Fort Albany) Indian Residential School. Ca.1909.

Today, I visited Anima Mundi, part of the Vatican Museum with Indigenous “artifacts” kept in the Church’s private collection. There is an “Ontario”pipe stove from the 18th century, Haida Gwaii masks from the 18th Century, much more. I photographed them and was asked to leave.
A sovereign nation is being invaded in Canadian borders, do you stand with them? If you care about human rights…Freedom for Wet’suewet’en. Freedom for Ukraine.
