@srivoire I'll give this a read, thanks. I enjoy the contrast of the hopeful intro and the conclusion where they basically say "it'll be years before compilers are able to write good code for this."
Does anyone have a favorite talk/article on itanium? My reading group wants to discuss it, but I'm having trouble finding much. Something at a level for an intro grad-level arch class would be about right.
@anuragkar09 The whole reason ARM uses a relaxed memory model is not because of performance, but because they couldn't use something like TSO... they had to use the ARM model: Arbitrarily Reordered Memory.
It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that the ARM architecture profiles (Application, Realtime, and Microcontroller) might have had their names chosen for reasons beyond describing their purpose...
