Warning Against Unlawful Attempt to Elect a Patriarch

Mahibere Kidusan, a respected and long-standing spiritual organization within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, has issued a cautionary statement regarding a clandestine scheme by certain members of the Holy Synod to unlawfully elect a Patriarch and General Secretary of the Holy Synod. In a comprehensive four-page statement delivered in Amharic on February 27, 2024, the association sternly admonished those individuals who are endeavoring to unlawfully replace the exiled General Secretary and proceed with the election and appointment of a Patriarch.

It is worth noting that both the duly elected Patriarch and General Secretary of the Holy Synod are currently serving, despite the fact that the General Secretary, His Eminence Abune Petros, was refused re-entry to Ethiopia upon his arrival at Bole International Airport and subsequently deported to the United States of America.

The association lamented in its statement the severe onslaught that the holy Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has endured in recent years, characterized by a meticulously planned and structured attack. This is evidenced by the targeted killings of priests, monks (including the tragic murder of four senior monks at Zequwala Dabra Kawakebt Abune Gabra Manfas Qeddus monastery), and devout followers due to their faith, as well as the extensive destruction of churches and monasteries. Furthermore, there have been concerted efforts to undermine the institutional framework of the church. The association cautioned that unless stringent law enforcement measures are implemented and perpetrators held accountable, these attacks will persist.

In its concluding remarks, the association urged all members of the Church, including those within the Holy Synod, the clergy, the youth, and the faithful at large, to unite fervently and defend their Church. It reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to collaborate with all stakeholders to safeguard the Church.

Reports indicate that the Patriarchate has formally requested the government, in writing, to facilitate a platform for discussing pressing issues that have led to the loss of lives among its members and have threatened the integrity of the Church as a whole. Regrettably, church sources reveal that the Church's calls have gone unanswered, with no response forthcoming from the government.
