These days, the concept of Baju Melayu is lost for some people who wanted to modernise or give something new to the new generations. It’s nothing wrong with wanting to keep the tradition going by making a few adjustments to it but bear in mind that sometimes less is more.

“It’s definitely not swimwear, it’s my cycling suit inspired by the Power Rangers that I designed myself,” he said. He also said that he chose the design because he wanted to show off his nice body.

He paired his Baju Melayu with “songkok” and “samping” leading to netizens’ hatred for what they claimed to be mocking the official full attire of Baju Melayu. A lot of netizens made fun of the tight spandex by calling it swimwear.

Recently, Dato’ Aliff Syukri bin Kamarzaman released his new Raya song Chu Ku Chuk Raya, which netizens criticised because of the outfit he wore in the music video. He was slammed for making fun of the traditional Baju Melayu by wearing a skin-tight spandex body costume.

Several netizens made the point that it was insulting for a woman to wear a baju melayu while exposing her naked legs. “Not related to traditional baju melayu at all. Don’t ruin the Baju Melayu.” said a user.

Indeed, people nowadays love modernised things but the fuse between traditional outfits and modern fashion by the brand is just too much. They turned the Baju Melayu into an oversized shirt paired with oversized short trousers.

KUALA LUMPUR: A so-called ‘fashion runway’ at Bukit Bintang Street has been disapproved by many netizens on social media. The quick runaway from a local brand, Behati, showed various versions of improvised and modernised Baju Melayu in bold rainbow colours.
