I started working on this in January. It feels like a missive from another planet right now. But… Purim is this week. For @tabletmag, in an homage to my Soviet grandmothers, I imagine how #JewishFood could have developed in the USSR.

And here's the recipe itself - Soviet Salmon Zakuski - with canned salmon and capers. A very Soviet-era homage. #hamantaschen#JewishFood

More savoury hamantaschen - and an essay I wrote for @tabletmag a couple years ago, imagining the Jewish holidays foods that could have been. #JewishFood#Hamantaschen

It's hamantaschen week! If you're looking for something savoury, I've just posted a mushroom hamantaschen recipe that imagines how #hamantaschen might have developed if Soviet-Jews had been permitted religious freedom. #JewishFood#recipes#Purim https://t.co/YTDySwydpq
@SashaVasilyuk I've gotten very into them - and my kids love that we basically can eat hamantaschen for dinner and then the regular ones for dessert. I did a recipe for salmon ones in Tablet a few years ago, on a similar 'what if we'd celebrated Jewish holidays in the USSR?' theme.

Really excited for this @Pushkin_House talk on Russian food since 1800, which covers some of my fave interests - state control over food, Russian vs. Soviet cuisine & why Russians consider dishes like Uzbek plov "their" food. Today 14:30EST. #sovietfood https://t.co/i0PnL9fE2D
Join me @latimesfob or, better yet, give me tips for my 1st time! I’ve heard legends about the green room… And of course, if you’re into historical fiction, come to Sunday talk with @melissachadburn @crystalhanak@nguyen_p_quemai & Myriam Chancy. #bookfest
@VladaTeper I was glad you wrote about that. My grandparents were here for only a few months, and I'd forgotten so much of that period - or just didn't understand what was going on - but Gorbachev really stood out, even to my 10-yr-old self.
