@PSLToFlushing@James_Schiano FWIW, batters should avoid challenging those corner calls, because that's where umps are usually wrong in the batter's favor. Pitchers & catchers should avoid challenging the edges, where umps are usually wrong in the pitcher's favor.
@PSLToFlushing@James_Schiano Not surprising that Soto isn't great at challenges. He knows the HUMAN zone better than anyone. The ABS zone is a new zone. Here are his 3 challenges. 2 are outside the human zone.

@knavely I think the analog of a bluff in poker would be a bluff in chess. Making an empty threat to elicit a response, or even a resignation. Bluffs aren't unique to poker, but they're so fundamental to the game that it's hard to really compare them to other games.

@knavely The poker analog would be finding spots where being aggressive forces the opponent to think to defend correctly. The clock isn't usually such an issue, but repeated pressure can cause cracks, and in online poker there is little time to make decisions.
@knavely Fantastic!
Forcing someone to find the defense forces them to burn time. If they can't find the defense without burning too much time, then your attack succeeded strategically even if it failed tactically.
@knavely Of course, when our combinations work out, it's only because at some point our opponent has failed to defend properly. It's impossible to win a chess game without the opponent deviating from optimal play, either in moves or speed.
@knavely I think it's easier to internalize and accept the idea that calculation is a skill, but harder to really believe that being good at clock management is a skill that deserves to be rewarded. I think many see it as a failure by the other person to play fast enough.
