**“Instructions on How Not to Die in Elementary School: Mexico 2025”**

Knowing that this sign is posted at the entrance of an **elementary school in the state of Guerrero** turns the photograph into something that burns the eyes.

It is no longer just a blue vinyl sheet. It is a silent scream, a historical document that certifies that, in barely seven years, Mexico has ceased to be a country and has become a war zone where kindergarten children learn to throw themselves to the ground before they learn to count.

In that Guerrero elementary school, a state now vying for the shameful first place in intentional homicides, forced disappearances, and territory controlled by drug cartels, childhood has been officially cancelled. The playground shares GPS coordinates with execution sites. Recess ends when the curfew imposed by the local cartel bosses begins.

The most brutal part is how naturally the catastrophe has been accepted:

- An elementary school teacher must be willing to take bullets with his or her own body to shield six-year-old students.
- Seven-year-olds are taught that pulling out a cell phone to record can cost them their lives.
- The new hero is no longer the one who stands up to defend others; the hero is the one who lies perfectly still for twenty minutes after the last burst of gunfire, praying it really was the last.

For decades, no matter how corrupt previous governments were, there was at least the protective fiction of the State: we spoke of “safe schools,” of “shielding,” of “deterrent presence.” The cartels understood that certain lines, even if occasionally crossed, were not flaunted with such raw impunity in front of children.

That fiction was shattered between 2018 and 2025.

In just seven years:

- The National Guard, launched with great fanfare to “recover peace,” now rolls through towns in convoys that lower their windows and greet the local plaza boss so they are allowed to pass.
- The daily security briefings have become a bureaucratic ritual of counting bodies and explaining why nothing is done.
- The slogan “Hugs, not bullets” has been literally translated into hugging your desk while bullets come through the classroom window.
- The president who swore he had “tamed the tiger” now presides over a country where the tiger walks into elementary schools and the State greets it with an eight-step poster on how not to die.

That piece of blue vinyl taped up with duct tape is the new birth certificate of a failed Mexico: physical proof that the State has abdicated, surrendered, and outsourced the protection of its children to a printed sheet that no parent should ever have to read.

This is the rawest, most honest image of what we have become: a country where childhood is protected by throwing oneself to the floor and covering one’s head, because the adults who promised to take care of them handed over the keys long ago.
