At a London Climate Action Week discussion, “Making the Case for COP in a Fractured Geopolitical Environment,” organized by Chatham House, the COP30 President joined Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP32 President-Designate, and Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, representing COP31.

Gedion highlighted Ethiopia’s strong track record on climate action, emphasizing the policy interventions implemented over the past eight years. He noted that COP32’s priorities will include ensuring continuity by building on the leadership and outcomes of COP31, which will be co-hosted by Türkiye and Australia.

He underscored that this approach reflects the overarching principle of Medemer, working collaboratively with those who came before us, to strengthen collective action and help reignite hope in the multilateral process.

I was pleased to meet with Julia Duncan, Vice CEO of Bayer AG, for a constructive discussion on deepening cooperation in Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors.

Our exchange centered on opportunities to expand investment, promote local manufacturing, strengthen resilient domestic supply chains, foster innovation, and enhance capacity building in the Healthcare sector.

Ethiopia remains firmly committed to developing a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership with Bayer AG, advancing investment and collaboration that improve healthcare services, increase agricultural productivity, and contribute to sustainable economic growth for the benefit of Ethiopians and the broader region.

Bayer has maintained a strong presence in Ethiopia for many years through the distribution of its pharmaceutical products and has played a meaningful role in supporting the country’s development goals. Through its “Bridging the Seed Gap” initiative, the company has helped smallholder farmers gain better access to quality seeds. More recently, its partnership with the Ministry of Health has focused on expanding access to essential health products and services, particularly in the areas of non-communicable diseases, family planning, and maternal and child nutrition. We successfully organized an awareness-raising forum on the Digital Ethiopia 2030 Strategy and the implementation of digital transformation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The forum was held in collaboration with the Institute of Foreign Affairs and colleagues from the Office of the Prime Minister have made insightful deliberations on the Digital Ethiopia Strategy 2030.

During the session, constructive discussions took place on the critical importance of building strong digital capacity in Ethiopia in order to remain an integral part of today’s increasingly competitive global environment. The session brought together senior officials and staff from our Ministry, the institute of Foreign Affairs and the Ethiopian Diaspora Agency.

Under the framework of our Ministry’s three-year Institutional Reform Program (2018–2020 E.C.), we have successfully implemented key digital initiatives, including: Document Management System, Smart Office system, Online document authentication and Power of Attorney services that will have considerable contribution to the realization of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 Strategy. Forums like this play a vital role in further strengthening our institutional capacity and readiness for digital transformation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programmed (UNDP), has concluded a four-day training program for diplomats focusing on international relations and geopolitical event analysis.

Such trainings provide diplomats with insights on how volatile global dynamics impact the international governance system and the balance of power among nations and regional blocs. Furthermore, it equips diplomats with the capacity to look into the positive and negative impacts of such events, conduct trend analyses, and safeguard the country's national interests.

These training sessions are an integral part of the Ministry's ongoing three-year institutional reform program, particularly the human resource development aspect which emphasizes on producing highly competent and ethically grounded diplomats to secure our national interests.

📣 In the article published by @IMFAfrica, Ethiopia’s foreign minister @GHessebon captures at length Africa’s opportunities and challenges in a fragmented world.

His Excellency argues that geopolitical rivalry is making trade, investment, and security more uncertain for sub-Saharan Africa. In the contemporary fragmented global order, as multilateral institutions weaken and resource competition intensifies, Africa faces greater economic and political pressures. The fracture also presents opportunities; if Africa stays focused on long-term goals, it can leverage its potential to achieve prosperity.

Meanwhile, #Ethiopia’s approach is to adapt its development model through reform, diversification, and a focus on renewable energy and emerging technologies, and it continues to make progress. As for Africa, its best path forward lies in stronger intra-African trade, greater investment in infrastructure, energy, and technology, and greater unity.
