@david___36@aservais1 The art market in Asia is horrible right now but they are trying to spin a sense of optimism. Was growing there for the past decade but over the past ~18 months Asia has seen the worst decline.
@CTabatabaie Smart strategy with the new CBA restrictions to fill out those role player spots with NBA-ready, high-floor / lower-ceiling Seniors whose main expectation is to eventually fill the 8-7-6 spots in the rotation (just like Payton Pritchard).
@theuniversalben And I agree the Basquiat market (and market in general) is soft and things are not so rosy. But I also feel journalists are pushing this idea of a crash landing for the sake of clicks, and it’s scaring collectors away.
@theuniversalben Irresponsible and misleading to incorrectly quote the estimate in dollars rather than pounds, and then to use that incorrect number as the basis for a sensationalized headline. Conclusion - the article is indeed an example of the “Doom Porn” Wirth is referencing.
@theuniversalben It’s just not a great example and has been offered around and burned badly. Also the hinges will turn people off. IMO it’s still overpriced at £15-20m (Which anyways is $20-25m USD, so it’s misleading to say this is half the original $30m estimate)
@aservais1@kunstmuseumbs@ArtinAmerica Fumbling an opportunity to spotlight important Black artists by pushing a hundred nobodies whose paintings do nothing beyond depicting Black subjects... It waters down the work of brilliant, art-historical artists like Toyin, Lynette, Armitage, Crosby... more isn't always better!
@theuniversalben @MagnusResch Best way to judge is by digging through Artnet and finding accurate comps and how they performed over the years. Those results won’t be pretty either, but for him to say that the art market down 50% because Paul Allen didn’t die / Macklowe didn’t get divorced this year is silly
@theuniversalben @MagnusResch Agreed that the market isn’t good. But the metric of average lot value / total auction volume is nonsense. It just happened to be that there was no huge estate or nine figure masterpieces this season. Stats people like Magnus way oversimplify the market.
@aservais1 I see her more in a lineage with Ohelen/Humphies/von Heyl than all those 10th gen Abex women. Plus Arne doesn't mess around. There's a reason she's not showing at Pace (whose standards have dropped dramatically) but rather directly with Arne.
@aservais1 There's a lot of overhyped abstraction lately but she is actually quite intriguing. Interesting process with printmaking techniques and lots of hidden iconography. Wavers between digital/physical, micro/macro. And they are totally different in person and quite powerful.
@gregorg @theuniversalben Meanwhile he allows for a fluff piece about her hot market to be published which will just stoke the flames… galleries today prioritize this market propaganda over a real critical essay in Art in America or Studio International… not to mention a proper academic journal…
