Many teachers are working hard to implement Cold Call. Executed well, it's a thing of beauty, but increasingly I think schools should prioritise implementing a core set of all-student response techniques (e.g. Mini Whiteboards). Here's why I think they should come first. (1/10)
Seeing a lot of schools mandating retrieval practice in every lesson but also seeing quite a few misconceptions. A quick thread: 10 ways to get retrieval practice wrong ⬇️ 🧵
@P_A_Kirschner SUMMARY
• A primary goal of school is to produce problem-solvers and critical thinkers.
• But, just because this is an end doesn't make it the best means.
• Highly guided instruction is generally more efficient for learning existing domain knowledge.

I’ve been working with AERO @EdResearchAU to create new classroom management resources for school leaders, to help them build a shared understanding of evidence-based approaches to classroom management.

40 years ago #OTD, President Reagan announced the Teacher in Space Project, calling upon NASA "to choose as our first citizen passenger in the history of our space program—one of America's finest—a teacher."

“Our role is to support the important work of our frontline teachers and educators, and others in the education systems, to make good decisions about the ways they teach by exploring, and building on, the evidence base, and giving people access to those insights”
Our latest article unpacks the foundational role of evidence in education, highlighting its impact on teaching practices. We talk about how evidence-informed methods support student learning and skill development across diverse educational settings. https://t.co/qgjM48Rvng
Delighted that the Nuffield Foundation has awarded a generous £340k grant to @CentreEduSyst for this important programme of work, which I will be leading as Principal Investigator & Chief Research Officer, alongside @patrickCES@Samfr@lucy_crehan & four excellent academic teams.
Proud of our work (@EdResearchAU) generating the first empirical evidence in Australia linking early childhood education and care service Quality Ratings with child development in partnership with @QldBrainInst.
This is slightly complex but important.
@EdResearchAU just released research that shows that education and care quality ratings predicted children’s developmental vulnerability when they go to school.

@VillanuevaBeard @TeachForAmerica Thank you for reading and sharing! I’ve been long inspired by Teach For alum and the efforts of the orgs to raise the profile of the teaching profession.
Really thankful to have had the opportunity to speak with @BisforBerkshire/@Edu_Historian on @HaveYouHeardPod on my research recently. This work on school integration speaks to a large body of important literature on school diversity/intergroup contact, but means a lot to me.
"So if we really want more people — more academic high achievers — to become teachers, we need to work on that social discourse...We have to think about how everyone perceives and thinks about teaching and how that influences people’s decision making." https://t.co/38VXrYOYV8
Driving demand for more academic high achievers to become teachers doesn't just improve student learning, it also shifts social norms towards a world where we celebrate learning and see it as one of the most valuable things that people can do with their professional lives.
Grateful to be able to share some of what I've learned from the many young people I've interviewed over the years about the struggles of exploring and deciding whether or not to teach.
“There's no silver bullet to getting more academic high achievers into teaching,” @Harvard lecturer @zidman told The 74. But, with the right systemic and social changes, it is possible. @HGSE https://t.co/i5sP3hpdaY
