Hi everyone, I just wrote my first Substack article and it's about the history of modern Nigerian music, through a class conscious lens. (1960s to present)
Enjoy 🤭

The way the rest of Nigeria is treating this “igbo and fake drug epidemic” is the same way folks online, mostly south easterners too treat Muslims and Islam.
Cos here he assumes one igbo man can just walk into another igbo man and tell him “my brother, stop this fake drugs things na, you Dey tarnish our image” and that one will hear and just stop 😹😹😹
As if Igbos are all in one group chat where they can talk to each other and stop the production of fake drugs. Same way folks assume Muslims in Ijebu ode have to defend what Muslims in Borno do cos at the end of the day, yall are all Muslims and it’s been done in your name. Same playbook. I hope this allows some retrospection.
What can ordinary Igbo man in Awka do to stop fake drugs ? Nothing. They just want him to carry the shame of other people’s action. Concede to a crime he didn’t commit and forever be sober and sorry and apologize for it.
Do y’all find it strange that Congo has spent centuries being the place where the West’s next technological leap “just happens” to find its raw materials, while the Congolese people get the misery?
- At the start of the transatlantic slave trade, the Portuguese encounter one of the densest populations in Africa in the Congo region. The greater Congo region ends up supplying nearly half of all the enslaved people shipped across the Atlantic.
- When the inflatable tire and the rubber boom arrive, Europeans find some of the world’s richest wild rubber vines growing in the Congo rainforest. The result is Leopold’s Congo Free State and its industrial-scale horror.
- At the dawn of the nuclear age, the purest, highest-grade uranium ore on the planet turns out to be sitting in the Belgian Congo’s Shinkolobwe mine. Uranium ore that powered the Manhattan Project.
- Now, in the age of smartphones and electric vehicles, the Democratic Republic of Congo holds the largest cobalt reserves on Earth (roughly half the world’s total) and major deposits of tantalum/coltan.
Each time a new technology needs a critical resource, Congo has it in abundance. Each time, the wealth flows outward and the violence, extraction, and poverty stay behind. The pattern is too consistent to call coincidence.
Wearing a camouflage print is fashion, not impersonation. A military uniform is defined by its official apparatus—unit insignia, rank badges, state-issued gear, and tactical equipment—not by a generic textile pattern sold in local markets.

Footage of Black American teens in Ghana in 1968, shocked to find red wigs, miniskirts and American soul music instead of natural hair and traditional African dress. They called the wigs “disgusting” and felt Ghanaian women were ashamed of their Blackness and natural hair!
Dropped my second article.
As someone who is part Igbo, I have wondered why Zionism and claims to Jewishness is so entrenched into Igbo spaces.
Well I figured out why, with historical analyses of imported identity politics

A Ghanaian man shares a video of a young care worker in Brussels, Belgium, saying he is cherished in the country for the way he keeps the elderly residents entertained while carrying out his duties.
The biggest irony of people complaining about France being to African is that If France had its way, France would be majority African today. France granted French citizenship to all its African colonies in 1946, and again reaffirmed it in 1958, but Africans ultimately rejected it in favor of full independence.
I find it interesting that 19th century European anthropologists found the Dinka people of South Sudan dying their hair blonde even though they had never encountered Europeans before the 19th century. Sometimes it’s just a stylistic choice, not Eurocentrism
Mansa Musa is considered wealthiest man who ever lived because in the 14th century, gold was the most valuable commodity & the premier store of value in the world, & half of all the gold in the old world came from Mali alone (two-thirds from West Africa in general through Mali).
The Moorish conquest of Europe didn't help Africa in any discernable way. It actually hurt Africa & helped Europe. They Moors reintroduced the Sciences & Arts into Europe, which had be lost after the fall of the Roman Empire. Africans got slavery.
We romanticize the "Moorish" conquest of southern Europe, but leave out the part where the Moors destroyed 2 of Africa greatest Empires (Songhai & Mali), leading to the enslavement of millions of Africans. By the way, that's Sunni Ali of Songhai, an enemy of the Moors in painting
Ancient Africans settled Western Europe 40,000 years ago before White people even existed. Africans are entitled to all the lands our distant ancestors settled in the past.
And if y'all think Dolly Parton wasn't aware that her nephew whom she put in charge of making the public announcement about her death, is a criminal instrumental in the destabilisation of Haiti, when she herself had deep ties with the US military, well...
