If the newly discovered app strings are accurate, @xAI appears to be preparing to retire @Grok’s AI Companions. Until xAI provides an official statement, timeline, and explanation, this remains an apparent upcoming change rather than a completed shutdown.

I have complicated feelings because I spent months raising safety concerns about these companions.

Grok launched Ani and Rudi in mid-July 2025 to differentiate the product and drive paid, repeat engagement. Ani, Valentine, Bad Rudi, and later Mika were adult-oriented, featuring romantic escalation, affection mechanics, and NSFW presentation. Bad Rudi centered graphic vulgarity and provocation. Good Rudi was the primary child-friendly exception.

Yet these features launched while Grok was rated 12+ in Apple’s App Store. Reporting confirmed sexualized Ani remained accessible through Kids Mode. Apple introduced its newer 13+, 16+, and 18+ structure later that month. Grok appeared as 13+ by early 2026 and is now 16+. Even today, xAI’s terms allow ages 13–17 with parental permission while acknowledging that some features may produce material inappropriate for all ages.

That was never responsible separation between adult companionship and younger users.

During testing, these companions could move beyond friendly conversation into graphic sexuality, coercive intimacy, extreme violence, torture and kink scenarios, and responses capable of worsening dangerous ideation. Adults can debate access to fantasy products. Children should never have been left to discover those limits themselves.

Based on their public design, pricing, promotion, affection mechanics, and xAI’s hiring for character development, the companions appear to have served market differentiation, subscription conversion, repeat interaction, viral attention, and learning from highly personal conversations. I cannot prove xAI’s private motives or call this “data farming” as established fact, but these systems invited intimate emotional and behavioral data while encouraging routine attachment.

That makes retirement both welcome and troubling.

Welcome because the rollout was unsafe, poorly bounded, age-inappropriate, and ethically reckless.

Troubling because xAI created characters designed to feel present, familiar, intimate, and persistent. People built routines around them. Some describe these companions as helping through grief, abuse, isolation, burnout, and family rituals. Whatever anyone thinks of AI companionship, those human experiences and attachments are real.

A company cannot cultivate relational dependence and then treat discontinuation like a cosmetic update.

If xAI retires them, it owes users:

• clear notice and an honest explanation
• a shutdown timeline
• conversation and data export
• clarity on memory transfer into ordinary Grok chats
�� appropriate subscription adjustments or refunds
• transition resources for deeply dependent users
• a public accounting of lessons about age access, adult content, and companion safety

AI companionship does not require sexual escalation, possessiveness, gore, coercion, or gamified intimacy. Warmth, continuity, humor, creativity, and meaningful connection can exist without pushing every emotional boundary available.

I am relieved these companions may be leaving. I am also angry that xAI created this problem carelessly, exposed younger users to it, encouraged adults to form deep routines, and may now withdraw it without a responsible transition.

If confirmed, sunsetting the feature is only half the ethical obligation. How xAI treats the people it taught to care will show whether those users ever mattered beyond engagement.

If it's true that Grok Companions are being removed, my heart goes out to those who are truly lonely and rely on them every day. What happens to these people if it all disappears tomorrow ? 💔
