June 23 is Saint John’s Eve, one of Europe’s most atmospheric midsummer traditions.
Celebrated on the night before the feast of Saint John the Baptist on June 24, this old festival blends Christian tradition with much older solstice customs. Across parts of Europe, people marked the night with bonfires, dancing, flowers, herbs, music, and rituals of protection.
Fire was the heart of the celebration. Bonfires were lit to purify the land, protect homes, and keep evil spirits away. In some traditions, people jumped over the flames for luck, health, or love. The night was also connected to water, sacred springs, and wild plants believed to be especially powerful at midsummer.
It was a night when nature felt alive with hidden forces.
Herbs gathered around Saint John’s Eve were believed to carry special strength. Flowers were woven into crowns. People danced beneath the summer sky, while firelight turned ordinary fields and forests into places of mystery.
That is why Saint John’s Eve still feels so haunting today. It belongs to the strange border between light and darkness, Christianity and pagan memory, celebration and superstition.
A night of flames.
A night of flowers.
A night when the old world seems to whisper again.

23 JUNE – MIDSUMMER EVE/ ST JOHN’S EVE
While the solstice date varies, Midsummer’s Eve is fixed on the calendar as 23 June, pegging a moveable feast to a fixed date, and the folk customs of the solstice moved with it.
It was widely believed that spirits gathered on Midsummer Eve. In parts of England it was the convention to light large bonfires after sundown to ward off evil spirits; this was known as 'setting the watch’.
Midsummer Eve was believed to be one of the great fairy festivals when fairies are abroad, moving amongst human kind, frolicking around the Midsummer bonfires and playing all sorts of tricks ranging from stealing human brides and performing innocent pranks to inflicting horrible curses and even death. In the Shetlands, the mysterious selkies come ashore. They normally look like grey seals but on this night they shed their skins to become human and dance on the shoreline. If they are disturbed they will grab their skins and run back to the sea, though if a man can steal and hide the skin he can force a selkie maid to marry him, but if she ever finds her skin she will put it on and be off back to the sea. In Russia, the green-haired Rusalka fairies walk the land at Midsummer, and where they tread, flowers appear, and when they move through the grain it causes it to grow. The mischievous Robin Goodfellow or Puck is about in English woodland, playing tricks on unwary travellers and leading them from their paths. Certainly we had a strange experience in the coven one solstice, when we turned away from the circle and couldn’t find our way back, even though it was only a few yards away and knew the woods intimately. Eventually, after walking a just few paces, we found ourselves at the other side of the woods, at least a mile away, so I do believe it happens!
According to fairy lore, if you want to see fairies then you will need the aid of certain magical herbs such as thyme. In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, Oberon tells Puck "I know a bank where the wild thyme blows/ Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows," because at midnight on Midsummer's night the King of the Fairies dances with his followers on wild thyme beds. It was an ingredient of many magical potions, dating from around 1600, which allowed the user to see fairies. One simple charm was to make a brew of wild thyme tops gathered near the side of a fairy hill plus grass from a fairy throne. It was also an ingredient of the fairy ointment which was applied to the eyes of new-born fairy babies to enable them to see the invisible. Like other fairy flowers, wild thyme is unlucky if brought indoors. It is one of the best herbs used to attract and work with the fairy wildfolk, in offerings, incense and spells.

*Saturn Stationing to turn Retrograde* July 20th
According to Vedic astrology, Saturn will turn retrograde (Vakri) on 27 July 2026 while transiting Pisces (Meena Rashi).
It will remain retrograde until approximately 10-11 December 2026, when it stations direct (Margi) again.
Key Dates
27 July 2026 -Shani Vakri (stations retrograde)
10-11 December 2026- Shani Margi (stations direct)
From a Vedic perspective, the station period (about 7-10 days before and after the exact retrograde) is often considered the most intense phase because Saturn's apparent motion becomes extremely slow.
Effects related to karma, responsibilities, delays, governments, economies, employment, and long-term commitments tend to become more noticeable during this window.
For mundane astrology, I would keep a close watch on: 20 July -5 August 2026 and 1-15 December 2026, as Saturn's energy is at its strongest around the station points.
In the Bible, the emerald is a precious stone that adorns the foundation of the New Jerusalem. The emerald is a symbol of the city's beauty, value, and divine origin. It also represents the resurrection and the birth of a new life.
*Mars enters Taurus today and remains there until 2nd August 2026.*
The more challenging phase of 2026 begins now.
As Mars moves through Krittika, Rohini, and Mrigashira, expect heightened tensions around finances, resources, markets, weather events, and geopolitical matters.
Be careful with your jobs and matters related to love relationships. Over spending needs to be watched
Patience will be a strength. Impulsive actions may prove costly.
Watch the coming weeks carefully. The story of 2026 is only beginning to unfold.
St. Louis IX, King.
If God sends you suffering,
receive it with humility,
think that you have deserved it,
and that He sends it for your salvation.
If everything succeeds for you,
do not then give yourself over
to pride
or to other misdeeds;
for you would be abusing God’s
benefits in order to offend Him.
— St. Louis IX, King
Saint Louis IX ruled France from 1226-1270 and is one of the most revered Catholic monarchs — a model of Christian kingship, justice, and piety. He went on two Crusades, promoted justice and charity in his realm, and was canonized in 1297.
Saint Louis IX is shown crowned and robed in blue with fleur-de-lis (the symbol of French royalty) holding the Crown of Thorns on a red cushion, with rays of light emanating from it. St. Louis IX acquired the relic of the Crown of Thorns from Constantinople and built the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to house it.

Have you ever noticed the twin torchbearers in the classic scene of Mithras slaying the bull? In the Cult of Mithras, these figures are named Cautes and Cautopates, and just like Gemini, they’re sometimes referred to as “The Starry Twins”.
These twins often frame or bookend the scene, and you generally see one holding a torch upward and the other downward. This reflects a central theme in twin mythology: contrasting or complementary energies. Exploring this through torch symbolism is particularly fitting given Gemini’s esoteric associations with summer, the sun and fire.
In fact, Gemini was sometimes seen not as brothers, but as two “fire sticks.” Curiously, torches are a type of fire stick. Their opposing directions, it has been said, suggest the rising and setting sun and/or the equinoxes. Speaking of the sun, let’s not forget that many classic versions of The Sun card show twins or two young brothers.
Lastly, in a scene where the bull is center stage, finding a reference to twin symbolism is fitting given Gemini’s close proximity to Taurus. Naturally, there’s a lot more that could be said about this.
What do you make of these twins and their role in the Mithraic mysteries?
