Allies are telling Europe to rebuild a system that Washington, Beijing and Moscow have already moved on from. The problem: Europe is simultaneously:

- Fighting a trade war with China (25% EV tariffs, China threatening retaliation).
- Cut off from Russia (20th sanctions package, €90bn loan to Ukraine, gas ban from 2027).
- In a transatlantic trade war (Trump’s 25% auto tariffs, troop withdrawal threats).

**2/5 – Beijing and Moscow are not interested in Europe’s “new order.”**

China has warned the EU that its “de‑risking” strategy – including EV tariffs and exclusionary procurement rules – could cause “substantial harm” to EU‑China trade. Beijing is not waiting for Europe to lead. It’s building its own sphere of influence, out of EU reach.

Russia is also not cooperating. Kaja Kallas has said EU‑Russia ties “will not return” after the war, and the EU is planning more sanctions, not a thaw. Moscow’s retaliation has already banned dozens of EU officials.

The message: even its “closest allies” are no longer reliable partners to Washington.

To shape a global system, you need energy security, military capacity, and diplomatic credibility. Europe has:

- Zero direct diplomacy with Moscow (Kallas: “we will not return to normal relations”).
- Declining US security guarantees (troops leaving, NATO trust eroding).
- An energy crisis (Hormuz choked, €27bn extra bill, industry de‑industrialising).
- A trade war with China that Brussels is losing (€359bn deficit, no alternatives).

You cannot shape a global order when you are marginalised by three superpowers at the same time.
