After Access Holdings released its half year numbers, I thought it’d be nice to see how the Tier-1 banks fared during the period.
You see, banking is a commoditised business, and you mostly do not make more than your balance sheet size allows. On average, Nigerian banks generate between 10% and 12% of their total assets in revenue, and it makes sense.
Most Nigerian banks are heavy on government securities, and the yields on those securities are rather uniform. The portion of financial assets allocated to risk assets is primarily in the oil and gas sector.
In summary, most Nigerian banks allocate assets the same way. It could have been different and a lot more interesting if we had a bubbling corporate space.
