Gen Zs Are The Problem ❓❓❓
One thing a lot of us face in Nigerian workplaces, especially as young professionals, is something we don’t always have the words for:
Corporate Paternalism 👌
When your boss or employer starts acting like your parent instead of just… your employer.
At first glance, it seems harmless, even caring. “I’m just looking out for you,” they say. “This company is like a family,” they preach. But after a while, that “care” starts to feel like control. And that “family” starts to feel like emotional manipulation.
Let’s break it down ⚠️
When the Workplace Becomes a Family House
🌚You want to resign or move to a new job opportunity?
They hit you with:
😳“After everything we’ve done for you?”
😳“So you just want to abandon us?”
😡“We trained you and this is how you repay us?”
You ask for your legal annual leave?
They respond like:
🤷🏽♂️“What are you doing at home for one week? Just wasting time.”
You suggest a new idea that challenges the status quo?
🤔“You this small girl/boy, you think you know better than us?”
Suddenly, your growth becomes a personal offence. Your boundaries become “disrespect.” And your independence starts to look like betr@yal.
That’s not leadership. That’s paternalism.
Why It’s a Problem❓
❌It creates emotional guilt in place of professional accountability.
You start feeling bad for wanting better for yourself. You hesitate to speak up. You stay in tox!c situations because “they were there for me at the beginning.”
But guess what? Growth is not betrayal. Wanting more is not ingratitude.
❌It blocks healthy communication.
In a paternalistic setup, feedback is seen as disrespect. There’s no room for dialogue, just hierarchy. So you either keep quiet or risk being labelled “difficult.”
❌It glorifies suf fer ing and loyalty over performance and growth.
Many of us have heard:
😡“In our time, we used to work 18 hours with no break.”
🤷🏽♂️Okay, Uncle Tunde, and how did that go for your mental health? 6-0
Modern work culture is not about how much you can endure, it’s about working smart, building value, and maintaining balance.
❌It slows down innovation.
A space where junior staff can’t challenge outdated systems is a space that’s slowly dying. Gen Z professionals have ideas, fresh, brilliant ones, but they’re often dismissed because of age or experience.
Gen Zs Are Shifting the Narrative
👌We’re not here for the “suffer first, live later” life. We want to thrive now. We believe in:
✅Clear boundaries
✅Mental wellness
✅Being paid what we’re worth
✅Respect without fear
✅And yes, quitting when it’s time to move on
And it’s not entitlement, it’s emotional maturity. It’s choosing not to be emotionally blackma iled by people who think they own your career because they once “gave you a chance.”
So What’s the Way Forward?
To Employers & Managers:
✅Respect the people who work with you. They're not your children.
✅Mentor without controlling. Guide without guilt-tripping.
✅If someone grows and moves on, celebrate that. It means you did something right.
🌚To Young Professionals (especially Gen Z):
✅Don’t let emotional manipulation keep you stuck.
✅It’s okay to say no, to walk away, and to prioritise yourself.
✅Boundaries are not disrespectful, they are necessary.
We all want to work in environments that care for us. But care is not control. Leadership is not parenting. And your boss is not your daddy.
Let’s stop confusing tox!c loyalty with professionalism.
Because in the end, no matter how much they act like family, if you drop de@d tomorrow, your replacement letter might go out the next day.
Protect your peace. Build your career with intention. And remember: you don’t owe anyone your future just because they gave you your first opportunity. Be respectful. Be diligent. Set boundaries.
Peace ✌️
