BREAKING: The Budget & Appropriations Committee, chaired by Sam Atandi, has proposed adding an extra Sh345 million to the Office of President William Ruto in its report to Parliament, which MPs will now vote on.

The same report also proposes adding Sh408.7 million to the National Police.

At the same time, it recommends cutting Sh240 million from funds meant for social protection programmes and support for older citizens.

Think about that for a moment.

More money for the Presidency.
More money for security agencies.
Less money for vulnerable Kenyans and senior citizens.

We were told there is no money. But when you follow the budget, you quickly realize the issue is not that money is unavailable. The issue is where the government chooses to spend it.

And what happened to the austerity promises by Ruto?

Yes, the Committee also proposes reducing the State House budget by Sh200 million. But even after that cut, the Office of the President still comes out ahead by about Sh145 million overall.

Budgets reveal priorities better than speeches ever can.

More Kenyans are now hurting as the cost of living continues to rise.

Latest inflation data shows inflation has hit 6.7%, the highest level in 28 months. Food prices alone have risen by 9.4%.

What makes it worse is that wages haven't kept up. Many workers have seen little or no salary growth, while some private sector firms have frozen pay altogether. In real terms, many Kenyans are earning less and buying less.

And there is an even bigger concern: if inflation climbs to 7.5% or higher, the CBK may be forced to raise interest rates. That would make loans more expensive for businesses and households, slow economic activity, and put even more pressure on struggling families.

This is a reminder that the cost-of-living crisis is far from over, and how poorly the govt is handling the fuel prices issue.

This is the highest level in over two years due to higher fuel prices.

Immediately the debate on fuel prices started in Parliament, most MPs allied to government quietly walked out.

Here is the picture.

That alone tells you their stand on the fuel crisis.

They know they would have to defend Ruto by defending these fuel prices which would have exposed how disconnected they are from ordinary Kenyans struggling with transport, food and electricity costs every single day.

So instead, they chose silence.

But silence is also a message.

And the painful part is this: Kenyans keep suffering while leaders avoid accountability right in front of us.
