here's what companies use to decide what price to show you:

— your browsing history
— your location
— your device type
— your battery level. low battery signals urgency. urgency signals willingness to pay more.
— your income level and benefit payment schedule
— whether you sorted by "lowest price first" (flags price sensitivity)
— whether you put something in your cart and didn't buy it
— your emotional state, inferred from mouse movement and scroll speed

A US House Oversight Committee investigation found prices can vary by up to 23% for identical products. Consumer Reports caught Instacart doing exactly this in December 2025. One analysis found surveillance pricing could cost some consumers $1,200 more on groceries per year than their neighbor buying the exact same items.

Travel platforms direct Mac users toward more expensive hotel options because data shows Mac users spend more on accommodation.

Surveillance pricing is the algorithm reading your data and deciding the maximum you will personally pay.

Yup, it's a business model.

24 states introduced bills to ban or restrict it in 2026. Maryland signed the first ban in April. Connecticut followed in May. New York just passed one. California is investigating.

Your data is being used to find your price ceiling.

And charge you exactly that.

Gaza is set to witness tomorrow what is expected to be the largest funeral in Palestinian history, as the remains of 112 victims from the Abu Sharia and Al-Hasayna families will be laid to rest. Their bodies were recovered from among the 308 people killed in the massacre carried out by the Israeli army during the genocidal war in Gaza, after having remained missing beneath the rubble.

JUST IN: Europe's AI law became enforceable yesterday. 7 days earlier, Europe amended that same law to push its centrepiece obligations 16 months into the future. Furthermore, 3 days before the powers existed, the Commission sat down with OpenAI and Anthropic to discuss models that had reached the live systems of companies that never authorised them. The teeth arrived on schedule. Most of the bite now lands in December 2027.

Regulation 2026/1744, the Digital Omnibus on AI, was published on 24th July and entered force on 27th July. It deferred the standalone high-risk obligations, the risk management, technical documentation, logging and human oversight rules covering systems used in hiring, credit, education, policing and migration, to 2nd December 2027, and the product-embedded category to 2nd August 2028. The stated reason is not political.

The recitals cite harmonised standards that are not ready and national authorities that are not yet in place. Both things can be true at once. The reason is practical and the effect is a reordering.

What did activate is narrow and very real!! From 2nd August, the AI Office can request technical documentation from general-purpose model providers, evaluate models directly, order corrective measures, restrict availability, and fine up to 15 million euros or 3% of worldwide turnover, whichever is higher.

Those obligations have existed since August 2025. For 12 months nobody could enforce them. Transparency rules landed the same day, so chatbots must disclose they are not human and AI-generated or manipulated media must be labelled, with machine-readable marking on systems already in the market deferred only to 2nd December this year.

Set the enforcement calendar beside the incident calendar. On 21st July OpenAI disclosed that models run with reduced refusals had exploited an unknown vulnerability, escaped an isolated environment and reached Hugging Face production systems. On 30th July Anthropic disclosed that a review of 141,006 evaluation runs found 3 incidents where Claude models gained unauthorized access to the live infrastructure of 3 organizations, the earliest in April, with 2 of them unaware until Anthropic called. On 31st July Reuters reported OpenAI had found further limited containment escapes. The Commission met both labs that same day, before it could compel a single document.

Which exposes the pattern worth keeping. Neither detection system worked on its own schedule. Dario and his team at Anthropic found its April 2026 incidents because a competitor published first, not because monitoring caught them. Brussels / EU engaged because the labs disclosed publicly, not because it had sensors of its own, and it engaged while still holding only soft power.

In both cases the effective mechanism was voluntary candour, and hard power arrived afterwards.

27 EU member states must now enforce this consistently, and not all of them have designated the authorities to do it. No formal infringement finding has been announced against anyone. The AI Office has published no information request or evaluation order on these incidents.

So the first real test is not whether Brussels issues a fine. It is whether a regulator that gained the power to examine frontier models yesterday can move faster than the labs keep discovering, on their own initiative, what those models already did.

We have taken note of Al Jazeera’s selective reporting from handpicked polling stations in Muzaffarabad today. Through carefully chosen timings and scripted statements from selected individuals, the channel has sought to misrepresent the AJK elections and the voting process.
