As we survey the #CoralReefs of the #Kiribati Line Islands, the question is “what defines this reef?” Vostok’s reefs are notably diverse and productive, unexpected given the island’s tiny footprint (<1km^2). Does the native vegetation and high abundance of seabirds plays a role?
"While it is true that some reefs have been damaged significantly, we still find thriving reefs on almost every island, whether it’s due to people’s protection or the reef’s own resilience." Scripps' @StuartSandin discusses @100islchallenge w/ @ecomagnews: https://t.co/bnm8i06iBA
This week we’re counting down to the most EXTREME #NSFfunded oceans discoveries. Follow along as we highlight our Nation’s oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes and the research that is critical to understanding our planet.

Great piece highlighting the engineering innovations of Vid Petrovic and Falko Kuester. Great partnerships are what help make the @100islchallenge so special. Thanks friends!!!
We put together an international team of volunteer science divers to work w/the Govt. of Maldives, @MMRI_Maldives & @100islchallenge to help inform that island nation's Marine Spatial Plan.
2 weeks in with 10 days left to go!

How do I become a coral reef ecologist? The 100IC team shares science and stories about careers in #STEM during an amazing Ocean STEM event organized by the team at @Birch_Aquarium. Over 200 students attended to mingle with Scripps scientists and learn about paths to science
Marine Biophysics Unit and the @100islchallenge team from @Scripps_Ocean are co-organizing the first ever #PlasticFree workshop at #OIST! This aims to compare #coralreefs across international boundaries. 25% of talks are virtual to reduce carbon emissions from workshop travel.
We love our volunteer team! Not everyone is pictured here, but we can’t thank this hard-working group of budding coral experts enough. As the lab family continues to grow, so does the data... @Scripps_Ocean
The 100IC team had the pleasure of meeting the amazing crew of the Hikianalia during their last stop in CA. Keep up the great work and sharing your wonderful stories! We'll see you out there ;) @Scripps_Ocean
Two more days of events with Hikianalia and the crew!
November 3 & 4, 10a-4p at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. It's free and family friendly get your tickets at the link in our bio. https://t.co/v0YwNnLXG4
This 'little coral' is actually not little (wait for the diver icon). In fact it's called "Big Mama". The @NOAA@sanctuaries of American Samoa is home to this gentle giant. Imagine the centuries of change that this behemoth has lived through! @NOAAFish_PIFSC@Scripps_Ocean#100IC
When I got updates from the #100IC team last week, I noted that we were sampling four islands simultaneously -- Taiwan, Dongsha atoll, Jarvis island, and Biscayne Bay. Corals were growing at each.
No two coral reefs are the same, and no two reefs will face the future the same.
When biology meets engineering, it can look like a video game...and that's ok. Note that our ability to make 3D reef models only happened because the gamers pushed to make computers faster (thanks GPUs!). Now we all can explore reefs virtually! @QI_UCSD@Scripps_Ocean#100IC
Congratulations to the Smith-Sandin undergraduates! Six of our students participated in the Scripps Undergraduate Research Symposium, sharing their projects with the @scripps_ocean community. A big congrats to Kyle and Karina for winning best poster!!
#100IslandChallenge#FishyFriday ! Check out a pair of masked bannerfish (Heniochus monoceros) spotted on our most recent expedition to #Palau. These fish, like most other butterflyfish, can be found in pairs or small groups in coral reef habitats.
Let's hold off on that obituary. Some coral reefs are thriving, and the @100islchallenge team thinks those reefs have something to teach us. Words by @ptullis, 📸 by Brian Zgliczynski for @bioGraphic https://t.co/hyn2bjrPQE
