This #WorldReefDay, learn how Scripps Oceanography scientist @StuartSandin, who leads the @100islchallenge collaboration, teams up with partners like @Esri to better study, understand and protect changing coral reef ecosystems around the world. Watch here: https://t.co/3lekW0cFW8
@deepseadawn@KakaniKatija This is great...looking forward to learning more about this work and tracking the expanding computational approaches to accelerate data extraction (and ecological learning) from imagery!!! Thanks Dawn!
🌎 We've had Earth's back since 1903. This #EarthDay, we celebrate where we've been and where we plan to go to continue leading research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health and more. 🌏
Island Conservation , @rewild, and @Scripps_Ocean, in collaboration with a consortium of Island-Ocean Connection Challenge (IOCC) partners, proudly announce the confirmation of the NEXT EIGHT ISLAND-OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS!

New #publication alert! Excited to share our paper in @ConBiology with recommendations for improving the accessibility of large-area imagery (aka #photogrammetry) for #coralreef#conservation. See thread 🧵 below or check out the paper here: https://t.co/otlU2eoncn (1/14)
The @GovtOfVanuatu, in partnership with the Waitt Institute, is conducting the largest nationwide assessment of Vanuatu’s coral reefs. This expedition will gather information about the status of marine life across Vanuatu’s coastal waters. #BlueProsperityVanuatu
A night at one of our wonderful museums in San Diego? An opportunity to see science meeting art with @ucsdlibrary ? An opportunity to talk with some of our SD natural historians? Give me a 🍺 (which is also there) and count me in! We hope to see you tonight! @100islchallenge
Join @ucsdlibrary at @SDNHM for Nat at Night featuring Scripps Oceanography marine ecologist @StuartSandin's work creating realistic models of #CoralReef underwater habitats.

3 years ago @StuartSandin (with the help of @NSF@Scripps_Ocean) pulled off a remote REU with students from all over the world in the midst of the pandemic. This weekend I got to meet some of those students, show them around SIO, and hear about the amazing things they are doing!
🪸 Scripps Oceanography scientists are revolutionizing #CoralReef conservation by using software to stitch together overlapping underwater images to create photorealistic 3D models of reefs that can quantify important changes, like coral growth, over time. Dive in. ⬇️ 🤿 🧵
JOB! We’re looking for a great modeller/quantitative ecologist to join our Gamay project @SydneyMarine. I’m #AMSA2023 all week if you’re around and want more info.
📢📢Just out in @ScienceAdvances !!📢📢

Our study shows that ocean currents can shelter coral reefs during major El Niño heatwaves. How did this happen…? By enhancing upwelling and delivering valuable nutrition to corals during peak thermal stress. [1/5]
@JonnyCharendoff , congrats! This time-series view of bite scars reinforces why corals are such a fascinating group to study. The partial mortality (i.e., the places where polyps were scraped away) was resheeted by surrounding corals. Another benefit of clonality! @Scripps_Ocean
All I can say is yeehaw 🤠! Finally published! We tracked the fate of thousands of parrotfish bite scars to see what grew on them (hint: not baby corals) 😁

Get ready to dive into the world of art and science at Salty Cinema at Scripps Seaside Forum on June 1! 🌊🎬 This ocean-themed film festival is making waves by illuminating the wonders under the sea on the big screen 🎥 ✨ Reserve your spot here: https://t.co/lFSwb8W2Rv
Am I the only person who finds this snapper, Lutjanus bohar, to be one of the more fascinating and charismatic reef fish? Their curious (and ridiculous) behaviors remind me of dogs, including their funny expressions (see here). @Scripps_Ocean@NG_PristineSeas
Hey, how come I didn’t get to join the photo…ha!
Jokes aside, thanks for visiting @Scripps_Ocean and the team. Connecting across institutions, organizations, and disciplines is the way that we can make our science efforts multiply for society today and tomorrow
