Kaman Singh, he was born on 23 April 1917 to Dafadar Vijay Singh Pathania, a Dogra Rajput from Ladori village of Nurpur town in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh (then Punjab).
Dafadar Vijay Singh had served with 23rd Cavalry during World War I in the Mesopotamia Campaign.

Within 50 km radius of my home in Himachal, I've 03 PVC recipients. Maj Somnath Sharma (his younger brother rose to become Army Chief) and Capt Vikram Batra (both posthumous). And Maj Dhan Singh Thapa. If I go another 100 km, we've 3rd PVC recipient in Nb Subedar Sanjay Kumar.
