Ok five years ago I sent out a load of micro tips for new teachers getting ready for September.
By popular demand (literally nobody) here they are again!
🧵 The more I think about it, the more counting and place value are to early maths what phonics is to early reading. You simply can’t ‘decode’ maths without them. And I don’t mean simple recitation of number names or surface level naffing about with place value cards
Odd One Out 🔢
Today we enjoyed having a go at spotting the odd one out. This led to some fascinating conversations about the different things that were 'odd'. The whole, the part or the missing part?
Love to see young children having a go at tasks like this. ✅

Very proud of my Year 1s this morning. They spotted some patterns and were able to discuss these. Some even moved on to writing their observations. Looking forward to our next I See Maths challenge tomorrow! @gareth_metcalfe
3 years in the making (a bit interrupted by the pandemic), I See Problem-Solving - Y2 will be released 10th January! 27/28 task families written. 6 weeks of final trials/edits to go. The final sample materials go out to my mailing list tomorrow: https://t.co/dN5ZrRiCOS
A very useful afternoon at @Eton_CIRL
Excellent CPD for all with a lot of reflection on the importance of getting research projects into real live classrooms and using the evidence to inform and improve teaching and learning for all. 📚
Really enjoyed talking to another group of students from @PCP_SCITT about remote learning and the learning situations schools are facing at the moment. 💻👩🏫
THREAD
So, we all wonder how we're going to keep children reading over summer when they're not in school and there are lots of summer reading challenges, which look great, but we've made our own focusing on diverse and inclusive texts from Reception up to Year 11.
Enjoyed this one a lot, so much thinking and explaining involved! Have a look at my previous tweets this week to see the other ‘task family’ activities that built up to this.
@gareth_metcalfe I have been thinking about the freedom they have had at home to manage their work and how I could replicate that in some ways in school. Also to 'Be More Toddler' in class and just enjoy it all. @Emma_Turner75
This session definitely got me thinking about what I want my classroom to look like going forward from this year. Lots to think about. Thank you for hosting @gareth_metcalfe
Loved the first Heartbeat of Education chat tonight. Emma, Katy and Mandy were fantastic, talking about the opportunities that lie ahead for us. If you joined in let me know what stood out for you 👍
