I have done my engineering from a college in Bengaluru and being from coastal Karnataka my accent is different from core Bengaluru Kannada and literally every single day someone will mock my accent by calling me ಮಂಡೆಬಿಸಿ, ಉಂಟು etc.. It used to hurt me so much that I forcefully learnt and changed my accent. In a few years I was able to talk exactly like a typical Bengalurian. Those initial days in Bengaluru still haunt me. It's not just my story. There are so many from Coastal Karnataka who faced exact same situation. Also till Shetty brothers came, Coastal accent was just used for cheap comedy in Kannada films. If today I say Tulu deserves equal status as Kannada in Karnataka, the majority would still oppose it. The reason I am telling all this is first we need to stop lying to ourselves that we are so good, we consider everyone as our own, we are ವಿಶಾಲ ಹೃದಯ ,North Indians are bad, Telugus are bad, Mallus are bad, Tuluvas are also bad, except us everyone else is bad etc etc. First give equal treatment to the people/language/culture of your own state and then demand the same from others. Otherwise in some or the other form Karma will do the same thing to you, that you do for others ( already we can see it ). The reason people of Karnataka are unable to unite like other state people is because there is so much difference and discrimination within Karnataka and without sorting it out nothing is gonna change. But one good thing is that times are changing. I can see Tuluvas and people from other regions are voicing for themselves. Hope our collective future is better than our past and everyone will work towards the same common and shared goals so that one day we become a model for everyone in all aspects.
