In this randomized controlled intervention, 50 healthy women participated: 28 in the experimental group applied rose essential oil to their clothing daily for one month, while 22 in the control group used plain water. Before and after the period, researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess changes in brain structure. The results indicated a significant increase in gray matter volume (GMV) across the whole brain, with a particularly notable effect in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), a region involved in memory processing, self-referential thinking, and emotional regulation. No significant changes occurred in areas like the amygdala or orbitofrontal cortex.
The olfactory pathway likely explains this effect: aromatic compounds from the rose oil travel directly to the limbic system, providing sustained stimulation that may promote neuroplasticity and help counteract age-related brain atrophy. The authors suggest this could have implications for dementia prevention, as the PCC is among the regions affected early in conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
This appears to be the first evidence that prolonged scent inhalation can induce structural changes in the adult human brain.

In people with diabetes, higher waking cortisol, more total daily cortisol, and a flatter decline slope from the waking peak all tracked with rising fasting blood sugar over a 6-year period.
“In healthy people, cortisol fluctuates naturally throughout the day, spiking in the morning and falling at night,” said Dr. Joshua J. Joseph, an endocrinologist and researcher at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center’s Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center who led the study. “But in participants with type 2 diabetes, cortisol profiles that were flatter throughout the day, had higher glucose levels.”

Blocking the glucocorticoid receptor reduces blood glucose and insulin in obese, diabetic mice. The glucocorticoid receptor is activated by cortisol in humans.

The same glucocorticoid receptor blocker lowers blood sugar in people with Cushing’s syndrome, a clinical state caused by prolonged exposure to high glucocorticoid levels (often it’s cortisol).

You can cause insulin resistance and hyperglycemia in mice using only corticosterone, which is the mouse equivalent of cortisol.
“Steroid-induced (they mean glucocorticoid) diabetes is the most common form of drug-induced hyperglycemia. Therefore, metabolic and immunological alterations associated with chronic oral corticosterone were investigated using male nonobese diabetic mice. Three weeks after corticosterone delivery, there was reduced sensitivity to insulin action measured by insulin tolerance test. Body composition measurements revealed increased fat mass and decreased lean mass. Overt hyperglycemia (>250 mg/dL) manifested 6 weeks after the start of glucocorticoid administration, whereas 100% of the mice receiving the vehicle control remained normoglycemic. This phenotype was fully reversed during the washout phase and readily reproducible across institutions... Moreover, glycogen synthase expression was greatly enhanced, consistent with elevations in muscle glycogen storage in mice receiving corticosterone. (That is high blood sugar where sugar is made in the liver.) Corticosterone-induced hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and changes in muscle gene expression were all reversed by the end of the washout phase, indicating that the metabolic alterations were not permanent.” ⁴

Common dietary strategies to lose weight, which work well in the short term, tend to increase cortisol and other hormones that interfere with glucose oxidation in the long term: fasting, limiting meal times, and anything said to “increase fat burning” will do it.
Things that increase fat burning usually increase fat creation (lipogenesis) and lower the metabolic rate in the long term. Those last two are the ones you need to work on for long-term optimal weight loss and optimal blood sugar regulation.
