#Tripura: Self-proclaimed content creator Amir Shokeen has apologised after a video allegedly showing him making #racial remarks against a youth from Tripura surfaced on social media and drew criticism over the targeting of people from the #Northeast based on their appearance and identity.

In a subsequent Facebook post, Shokeen said the video was scripted and claimed that the youth featured in it was known to him and had previously worked at a friend’s cafe in #Ahmedabad. He described the exchange as a humorous video in which both individuals were joking, while maintaining that he had no intention of insulting anyone.

“I had no intention of saying anything bad about anyone. If anyone felt bad, I apologise from the bottom of my heart. I respect everyone,” Shokeen said in his post.

He also apologised to the people of Tripura, saying he did not intend to offend anyone through the video. “My brothers from Tripura, I apologise to all of you with folded hands. Brotherhood is top priority. I am sorry,” he added.

🎥 | A video allegedly showing self-proclaimed content creator Amir Shokeen making racially derogatory remarks against a youth from #Tripura has triggered widespread condemnation, with Tipra Motha MLA Paul Dangshu urging the Delhi Police to initiate immediate legal action.

According to reports, the youth was allegedly mocked as “Chinese” and targeted over his identity. Dangshu said racial discrimination cannot be excused in the name of humour or content creation and called for stronger safeguards to protect people from Tripura and other Northeastern states from racial harassment.

Former Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma also addressed the issue, adding his voice to the demand for dignity, respect and protection for people from the Northeast. He added “Amir shokeen has made fun of our people and even the historic name of Tripura by calling it C#%tpura . If this is not an insult to us then what is ? I demand that a proper action a must be taken . YTF ,TSF ,TISF should immediately file a case and a police team should be sent to arrest this person.”

The incident has renewed concerns over racial prejudice faced by people from the Northeast in other parts of the country, with calls for effective action to ensure they can live, study and work without fear of discrimination.

Manipur is bleeding again because of BJP’s incompetence!

The horrific killing of four innocent civilians in the latest spate of violence is deeply condemnable. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Since May 2023, over 300 precious lives have been lost, while 24,530 are forced to be in relief camps in pathetic conditions. Women, children and vulnerable families continue to bear the brunt of this prolonged tragedy.

The BJP’s political machinations, from imposing President’s Rule to replacing the Chief Minister and reinstalling its own government, have yielded no peace. PM Modi, who did not even set foot in Manipur for nearly 29 months after violence erupted, has abysmally failed on his so-called assurance in Parliament.

The continuing bloodshed in this strategically vital border state is a grave indictment of the BJP’s failure to ensure law and order, protect constitutional rights and safeguard national security.

PM Modi and HM Amit Shah must answer three questions:

1️⃣ What happened to the Peace Committee constituted by Amit Shah in June 2023? What concrete measures have been taken to restore peace, protect citizens and address the continuing security challenges in this sensitive border state?

2️⃣ What action has been taken on the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Gita Mittal Committee’s recommendations? Why are thousands of people still displaced, even as the Supreme Court has flagged 31 unnatural deaths in relief camps? What has been done to ensure the safety, dignity and rehabilitation of women, children and displaced families?

3️⃣After more than three years, over 300 deaths, President’s Rule and a change of Chief Minister, who will take responsibility for this monumental failure of governance? How many more innocent lives must be lost before the Prime Minister and Home Minister act?

Manipur deserves justice, dignity, constitutional rights and lasting peace.

As a strategically important border state, its security and stability cannot be held hostage to the BJP’s political expediency.
