Just months after taking power in February 2026 on promises of restoring democracy, Bangladesh’s BNP government faces growing scrutiny over allegations of arbitrary arrests, mass detentions of opposition supporters, expanded digital surveillance, and restrictions on free expression. Human Rights Watch highlighted the arrest of at least four individuals for social media criticism, including one over a political cartoon. Rights advocates warn that shrinking civic space and criminalizing dissent threaten fundamental democratic freedoms. The international community should closely monitor these developments.

Granted Bail, Arrested Again — Is This Justice?
A court grants bail, yet the accused is reportedly re-arrested at the prison gate before regaining freedom. This is what allegedly happened to Ziaul Haque Zia, Joint General Secretary of the Tarakanda Upazila Awami League and former Chairman of Galagaon Union Parishad.
When court orders are followed by immediate re-arrests, serious questions arise about due process, judicial independence, and the rule of law. If bail does not lead to release, what message does that send about justice and the functioning of state institutions?

For supporters, this is a difficult transition period. For critics, it is evidence that key promises remain unfulfilled.
100 days later, one question dominates the national conversation: Where is Bangladesh heading next?

Rights Group Raises Alarm Over Detention of 49 Individuals, Including 17 Children in Bangladesh
The International League Against Arbitrary Detention (ILAAD), alongside JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), has alerted the United Nations over the reported arbitrary detention of 49 individuals, including 17 children, following a political rally in Bangladesh.
ILAAD and JMBF argue that the arrests raise serious concerns regarding due process, freedom of assembly, and the protection of children's rights under international law. The organizations have called for urgent international attention and an independent review of the case.
The incident has reignited debate over mass arrests in politically sensitive contexts, with human rights advocates urging transparency, legal safeguards, and independent oversight.

The biggest victims of BNP-Jamaat’s politics of vengeance today are Bangladesh’s students.
---
More than 500,000 students are reportedly facing disruptions to their education due to political intimidation, violence, and campus domination. Educational institutions should be places of learning, not arenas for fear and repression.
The right to education is a fundamental human right. When students are threatened, excluded, or silenced because of their political identity or opinions, an entire generation’s future is put at risk.
The international community, human rights organizations, and educational institutions must pay attention. Protect students. Protect education. Protect the future.

As a reward for secretly selling the sovereignty of Bangladesh to the Americans on February 9, 2026, the #UnitedStates ordered that he be elected as the President of the upcoming 81st @UN General Assembly.
From leading the Language Movement, the Six-Point Movement, and the Liberation War to transforming Bangladesh through unprecedented economic growth and infrastructure development, Awami League helped shape the nation’s modern identity. Yet on its 77th anniversary, the party faces bans, arrests, exile, and repression. History will judge whether Bangladesh chose democratic inclusion or political vengeance at this defining moment.

#AwamiLeague #77thAnniversary
A political party’s anniversary should be marked with reflection, dialogue, and democratic engagement—not military deployments, mass arrests, and barricaded streets.
As the Awami League marked its 77th founding anniversary, Bangladesh witnessed an unprecedented show of force: thousands of police, army deployments across multiple districts, hundreds of checkpoints, and arrests of party leaders and activists. Even peaceful symbolic activities and journalists covering events faced obstruction and intimidation.
The question is simple: Why does a government that claims democratic legitimacy fear the peaceful commemoration of a political rival?
The Awami League is not merely another political party. It led Bangladesh’s struggle for independence and has played a defining role in shaping the nation’s modern development. Attempts to erase its history or suppress its supporters through force will not strengthen democracy—they will weaken it.
Democracy is measured not by how governments treat their allies, but by how they treat their opponents. When anniversaries are met with checkpoints, detentions, and military oversight, serious questions arise about political freedom, pluralism, and the future of democratic rights in Bangladesh.
The world should pay attention. Bangladesh deserves a political culture where ideas compete freely, citizens can participate without fear, and no party is treated as an enemy of the state simply for existing.

📷 In Bangladesh, Prison Has Come to Mean One Thing: Arrested Alive, Returned Dead
A prison is not supposed to be a person’s final destination. When a healthy individual taken into state custody returns dead within a short period of time, it is natural for people to question whether this was a killing. Once again, the BNP government has turned prisons into death traps, reminiscent of what occurred under Ziaur Rahman’s rule.
Nurul Alam, Joint Convener of the Dhemsha Union Jubo League in Satkania Upazila, Chattogram, and a former student leader, was arrested and sent to Chattogram Central Jail. Later, news emerged of his death. A prison is under the custody of the state. Whether a detainee is guilty or innocent, responsibility for that person’s life and safety rests with the state.
The life of a person in state custody cannot depend on political identity. If prisons become places where deaths occur and even raising questions about them becomes difficult, then the issue goes far beyond the tragedy of a single family. It becomes a matter of grave concern for the entire justice system.
From the Yunus administration to the rule associated with Tarique Rahman, a succession of deaths in prison, lifeless bodies emerging from state custody, and the silence of those in power point to a troubling pattern. Suppressing opposition voices through arrests, intimidation, and fear can never be the language of democracy.
If the BNP chooses the path of political vengeance, history will one day demand a harsh accounting.

77 years of struggle. 77 years with the people.
Founded on June 23, 1949, the Bangladesh Awami League has played a central role in the Language Movement, the Six-Point Movement, the Liberation War, and the journey of building an independent Bangladesh.
Through challenges, sacrifices, and historic milestones, the party has remained a symbol of democracy, secularism, development, and the rights of the people.
On its 77th founding anniversary, we remember the sacrifices of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and countless leaders, activists, and citizens who contributed to Bangladesh’s journey.
Not fear, but courage. Not division, but unity. Not vengeance, but justice.
