Met PK Sharma in a Delhi-Meerut passenger train for a news report. For 40 years, this Meerut resident has been getting up at 4.30 am to join his office in Delhi, and reaching home by 9.30 pm. Six days in a week.
In most families, a generation has toiled this way to push the financial status up, uncomplainingly, living for the monthly salary, with no room for risks or adventure. Like treading a straight line without venturing sideways at all.
Their younger generation must understand such great sacrifices, make better use of their time and brain and not waste their privilege seeking cheap entertainment
Dr. Carl Sagan teaches about our place in the Universe ✍️
The size and age of the Cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our tiny planetary home. In a cosmic perspective, most human concerns seem insignificant, even petty.
And yet our species is young and curious and brave and shows much promise. In the last few millennia we have made the most astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the Cosmos and our place within it, explorations that are exhilarating to consider. They remind us that humans have evolved to wonder, that understanding is a joy, that knowledge is prerequisite to survival.
I believe our future depends powerfully on how well we understand this Cosmos in which we float like a mote of dust in the morning sky.
-- as mentioned in Cosmos (1980)
"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less."
— Marie Skłodowska-Curie (1867-1934)
“Most people never pick up the phone and call. And that’s what sometimes separates people who do things from people who just dream about them.”
~Steve Jobs
As a Buddhist monk, I’m dedicated to promoting inter-religious harmony. All religions accept the value of warm-heartedness. Some believe in God; others have faith in karma. When I hear about fighting among religious people, I feel very sad—as if medicine has become poison.
Personally I am not comfortable with any religious orthodoxy that asks something of women that it doesn’t of men. Choice is a really misleading word in feminism with the amount of cultural conditioning we are all products of.
