@MicrobiomDigest What do you mean by "TERFism"?
Women get this label for simply stating that there are 2 sexes in humans, & sometimes sex is important (e.g. same-sex attraction, the female category in sport).
Often this label is accompanied by threats of violence.
A Happy New Year to you all.
It’s going to be a challenging one.
The ongoing massacre in Gaza
Accelerating environmental breakdown
Trump’s bid for the White House ….
Those of us who want a better world will have to work even harder than before.

Silencing tactics like name-calling (TERF, far-right, fascist, etc) lose their power when many people speak out.

I just watched a #MagdalenBurns New Year's message (Jan. 2017) reflecting on the previous year. One remark was that a lot of people think the same thing, but are too afraid to speak up. Just like today, really.

I could do a top 100 reasons to despair in 2023 but here's my top 10 good news stories for nature this year:
1. Has to be the passing of the Nature Restoration Law. What a battle it was but we now have a basis to turn the tide for nature in the 🇪🇺 🙌

Happy 2024 - the year of Tickle V Giggle! Let’s kick it off with a brilliant explanation of the case!
“This court case will eventually be as famous as Roe V Wade. If Sall wins her constitutional challenge then all of 🇦🇺 & even beyond 🇦🇺 will be affected”
https://t.co/fXaR3E8kD0
@modonnellDL I was thinking exactly that. Also "..that the State shall strive to support care. I think it’s very clear that there’s an obligation there that is meaningful.” There is no meaningful obligation implied by the word 'strive' (~we'll do our best).
@FargusWotson .@FondOfBeetles & @Scienceofsport have been debunking this nonsense argument for years.
Doping in athletics, using a motor in a 🚲 race, or using a car to complete part of your ultramarathon (happened in 2023) are all unfair advantages that don't necessarily result in winning.
Here is my short summary of healthcare in 2023
1⃣Magnesium glycinate does not help in sleep or reduce depression. This was the same finding or lack thereof in the years 2022, 2021 and 2020. It will most probably the same in the coming years.
2⃣Detox was still a thing even in 2023, even after repeatedly educating people that they have a liver and two kidneys that does it for them for free.
3⃣Cold water immersion/showers makes you feel good - temporarily, after a sweaty workout. Just like how watching a good Netflix series does or playing with your pet does. It does not "boost immunity," or fight depression or detox your systemic inflammation. But you believe it does all that because your favorite sportsperson does it.
4⃣In India, people found that paying to inhale flavored oxygen in special bars seemingly improved their health and detoxified their bodies even when the classic unflavored version was anyway available for free.
5⃣David Sinclair was wrong. There is no high-quality evidence that Resveratrol improves lifespan or has a substantial effect on any human disease. It is also wrong of Sinclair to give anecdotal evidence of his gracefully aging father in this matter.
6⃣People still went for multivitamin mineral cocktail injections to boost their immunity in 2023, but only ended up peeing their money out which they do not realize and probably will never. Hello 2024.
7⃣After decades of research and a lot of it in 2023, researchers have finally figured out what vitamin D supplementation eventually does for health. Nothing. Supplementation of vitamin D increases blood levels of vitamin D and nothing else.
8⃣Andrew Huberman was wrong. Although sold as a dietary supplement for insomnia and as anti-stress, there is insufficient scientific evidence from validated and replicated high quality human trials that Ashwagandha is safe or effective for treating any health condition or disease.
9⃣Turmeric/curcumin supplements were still the best-worst supplement researched in 2023 and most wastefully glorified in 2023 - wasting loads of money, human resources and time. The identified benefits of turmeric supplementation on health and disease in 2023 was found to be same as it was in 2022, 2021 and 2020 - zero.
🔟Black coffee is still the best dietary supplement with adequate evidence that demonstrates its benefits in liver disease, especially prevention of fatty liver, progression to chronic liver disease and risk reduction in liver cancer. It is not useful as an enema. Please dont waste your coffee in the wrong hole.
1⃣1⃣Homeopathy still managed to blindside educated people even in 2023, proving that human stupidity is infinite.
1⃣2⃣Covid-19 still managed to kill people, increase morbidity and reduce quality of life among 100s of 1000s of people in 2023 and still continue to do so even after everyone decided to conviniently forget about that "simple flu" that killed millions proving that "There is a time and a place for everything, including ignoring things" and that if you ignore some problems they get bigger and bigger and worse and worse. But it happens so slowly so you don’t even really notice. Pretty soon you can’t remember a time when you weren’t drowning in problems. Dont let your gaurd down in 2024.
1⃣3⃣ People thought they could do away with spectacles by looking at the Sun. Their brains belong in a Museum of History of Evolution.
1⃣4⃣ Chiropractors started victimizing animals after decades of torturing humans.
1⃣5⃣ In India, Fintech bros became health influencers and everyone who listened to them still lost money and additionally their health also on the side.

Welcome to being gay in 2023, where you're shamed for having an exclusive sexual orientation in the name of inclusion.
The spokesperson of #UNICEF, @1james_elder, was asked how he felt after leaving #Gaza:
James is FURIOUS.
We should all be.

Laws of war are not a recommendation, & not based on reciprocity.
Atrocity crimes by one party never legitimize violations by another.
Respect for the laws of war is not optional. It's an obligation.
Those responsible for violations amounting to #WarCrimes should face justice.
