You didn’t “remember” 9/11. You sanitised it.

Nineteen al-Qaeda hijackers murdered nearly 3,000 people in an act of Islamic terrorism. They invoked the Koran and Islamic teachings to justify mass murder. Whether their interpretation of Islam was legitimate is irrelevant to the historical fact that religion formed an explicit part of their justification for what they did.

Yet you reduced all of that to “terror attacks”, without naming al-Qaeda or acknowledging the ideology and religious justification of the men who carried them out.

You have no difficulty naming far-right extremism or Islamophobia when those things are relevant. But on the anniversary of an atrocity committed by Islamic extremists, suddenly the identity and motivation of the perpetrators disappear from the description.

Naming Islamic terrorism is not an attack on Muslims. It does not imply collective responsibility, any more than naming another form of religious or political extremism condemns everyone associated with the wider belief system.

Nearly 3,000 people were murdered on 11 September 2001. Honouring them does not require sanitising why they were murdered.

Say who did it. Say what motivated them. Remember the history as well as the victims.
