A senior UN official warned that Gaza is facing unprecedented destruction, with an average of 30 tons of rubble per person. Jorge Moreira da Silva, the UN under-secretary-general and executive director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), said Gaza contains more than 60 million tons of debris and that clearing it could take over seven years.

Silva said people in Gaza are exhausted, traumatized, and overwhelmed, with harsh winter conditions and heavy rains compounding their suffering.

Children are among the hardest hit, having missed school for the third consecutive year. Silva emphasized that daily life for Palestinian children in Gaza is defined by loss and trauma, with long-term physical and psychological wounds mounting.

The image of Gordon, known as “Whipped Peter,” stands as a harrowing testament to the brutality inflicted by Euro-American settlers who built their prosperity on the backs of enslaved Black bodies. His scarred back, a roadmap of pain and resistance, became an emblem of the deep inhumanity of Euro-American settlers—one defended, rationalized, and normalized by colonial power.

Over 160 years later, the descendants of this same settler-colonial ideology continue to wield the whip— The picture on the right is of Palestinian Mohammad Abu Tawileh whipped and tortured at the hands of Israelis who are as savage as plantation owners.

Just as American settlers denied the humanity of enslaved Africans to justify their domination, the Israeli state continues to deny the basic rights of Palestinians under the guise of security and self-defense. In both cases, the oppressors cloak their violence in narratives of progress, civilization, or survival—while the bodies of the oppressed bear the true story.

Gordon’s back and Mohammad’s back are chapters in the same book of empire. The tools may have evolved, but the logic of supremacy remains unchanged.
