Aranka Siegal writes for young people hoping that having read her story they will refuse ever to participate in spreading prejudice.
I’m 17yo, she was only 15.
81 years later, we still wonder how it could have been possible...

Today is the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Today, we remember the tens of thousands of Jews who were murdered there and all who survived against all odds, as well as the brave members of the British Armed Forces who liberated the camp.
#Auschwitz was liberated 80 years ago but for thousands of #Jews, the nightmare didn’t end. 56,000 prisoners were sent in #DeathMarches. Along the way, most of them died. #ArankaSiegal and her sister Iboya were among them.

We expect that some 50 Auschwitz Survivors will come to the Memorial to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation. The event will be held in front of the main gate of the former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp.
On January 27, the eyes and ears of the world should rest upon them.
We must safeguard their voices from silence, distortion, instrumentalization, or being overshadowed. Their message should guide us and help both to commemorate all victims of the camp and shape the memory of the human tragedy of #Auschwitz.

In March 2024, researchers made the poignant discovery of a chess set under the floor of an #Auschwitz barracks. It had apparently been drawn by a prisoner on small pieces of cardboard.
