Congratulations to Dr. Ken Rockwood, a Nova Scotia gerentologist, on being awarded the Order of Canada for his expertise in frailty research. He is the creator of the Frailty Index and Clinical Frailty Scale, now used in health systems worldwide. π
We cycled to Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with 19 windmills & pumping stations to move water off the land into storage basins. The Netherlands leads in modern water technology as 26% of its land is below sea level & 59% is at sea level or vunerable to rising oceans.
Today we cycled to the Bergen-Op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery. The Dutch have maintained this beautiful cemetery. It was touching to see these 7 headstones set together - the entire crew of one bomber!
Today we visited the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. It was chilly and overcast, but that kept the crowds away and we had the place to ourselves. What the Canadian troops accomplished there was nothing short of miraculous! #CanadianVimyMemorial#proudtobeCanadian
Today, we toured the Teatro Colon (opera house) in Buenos Aries. It opened in 1908 and although it is much older than the NY Met and Sydney Opera House, it is supposed to have superior acoustics. The stage was being set for an upcoming performance of Gustav Mahler's Resurrection.
We have replaced hiking with strolling the streets of Buenos Aries. 'The Republic de la Boca' - aka the Boca neighbourhood - is a treat to all the senses with lots of colour and the biggest steaks on the grill!
Today, we hiked the south side of Mt Fitz Roy. At the Piedras Blancas viewpoint we could see the glacier spilling down the mountain to a hidden lake. This was a 21k hike with multiple weather changes, but it was sunny at the viewpoint!
