DVS explained – join us in Peterborough on Monday
Join us on Monday (22 July) for an interactive Direct Vision Standard (DVS) Explainer event for operators at our Worldwide House HQ in Peterborough.
This is an opportunity to hear from one of the authors of the DVS Explainer and see first-hand what compliant kit conforming to the new Progressive Safe System (PSS) standard looks like.

Meanwhile, we’ve been calling on officials to give firms more time to fit new equipment ahead of a key meeting tomorrow (Thursday 18 July). We understand that the three-month grace period where authorities won’t enforce could be extended to six months. We will update you when we know more.
Our MD @RHARJSmith met with the new Future of Roads Minister @LilianGreenwood this morning.
Commenting on the meeting, Richard said:
"I was delighted to meet the new Future of Roads Minister today. I congratulated the Minister on her appointment and set out the key priorities facing our members across the country and our commitment to working in partnership with her to solve the challenges ahead:
▪ Cost pressures facing operators with average margins of 2%
▪ Boosting roads investment - nationally and locally
▪ Improving driver facilities and addressing the major truck and coach parking shortage
▪ Skills shortages - the need to boost the number of vehicle mechanics and continue HGV Skills Bootcamps
▪ Greater clarity and certainty needed on the transition to net zero
I look forward to working with Minister Greenwood in the coming months."

We’re encouraged by a number of commitments in the #KingsSpeech, some of which are key RHA asks. We'll engage with Government to ensure their legislative programme will support the haulage, van & coach sectors to drive economic growth.

The RHA is pleased to announce that hauliers are set to get more time to prepare for new Direct Vision Standard safety criteria launching later this year.
Officials are set to extend a grace period to six months for hauliers operating in the capital to comply with new Progressive Safe System (PSS) launched on 28 October 2024.
Transport for London (TfL) says If you wish to apply for the grace period you will need to provide evidence that you have installation works arranged to fit the PSS but that this is scheduled for after 28 October 2024.
This follows intensive RHA campaigning to ensure hauliers have clarity and more time to get their fleets ready for the changes.
We are awaiting confirmation from Transport for London on these details.
Enforcement would begin from 4 May 2025 – an extension of the original three months.
We have collaborated extensively with the industry to better understand its challenges to be able to comply to the new standard with short timescales. Our most recent survey revealed that 57 percent of respondents said they weren’t confident of being able to install compliant equipment in time. Nearly 700 operators responded to the survey.
Now we’ve secured much-needed clarifications and a grace period extension the industry can now move forward to invest. Meanwhile, we are also clear that road safety is everybody’s responsibility where all road users play their full part. We will continue to ensure that policymakers recognise and apply this important point.
To help the sector better understand what they need to do to comply, we have recently published a DVS Explainer document produced by the new standard’s authors Loughborough University: https://t.co/2xdeCClhIg.
We are also hosting an event at our Worldwide House HQ this Monday 22 July with Loughborough where operators can find out more first-hand about what kit should and shouldn’t do. More than 150 guests have signed up and we have closed registrations for our morning session.
There are still spaces at out afternoon session. More information here: https://t.co/GQ5RHpfhzu.

Today we launched 'Supplying London – The Road Freight & Coach Industry Manifesto for London.'
Calling for more support for the haulage and coach sector in the capital city, we've set out some key asks ahead of the May 2nd mayoral election.
“We are committed to working with the next Mayor of London to ensure more efficient freight and coach journeys. Our members based in the capital stand ready to work to take forward the priorities to ensure London’s commercial vehicle sector has the support it needs.” @RHARJSmith
Our recommendations:
◾ Appoint a freight commissioner
◾ Establish a London freight council
◾ Ensure road freight regulation is backed by industry
◾Maintain access for lorries where they are needed
◾Create a London coach strategy
◾ Address skills gaps

We continue to make representations to Transport for London on the challenges operators have getting compliant with the new Progressive Safe System (PSS) which will be launched on 28 October 2024.
HGVs of more than 12-tonne gross weight will be required to fit new safety equipment to operate in the capital.
However, following industry feedback that kit meeting the new requirement is giving incorrect warnings, we have asked TfL to clarify elements of the PSS specifications.
We’d like to thank members for giving feedback on the issues you have encountered so far through the industry survey and the webinar we held on 20 February. This has helped us articulate the challenges you face to TfL.
To assist our on-going conversations with TfL, we would be grateful for further specific feedback such as:
· where, when and how problems such as false alarming have occurred;
· where you feel aspects of the specifications require clarity;
· questions you would like to ask TfL directly to help resolve issues.
Please email us at this address: [email protected] with this feedback.
Please can you also indicate whether you are willing to speak directly to TfL about the issues you are facing.
We’re moving quickly so would ask you to respond by 6 pm this Friday 19 April.
Your thoughts and comments welcome.
