When people say "the world needs American leadership," ask them to be specific.

Leadership in what, exactly?

In weapons sales? The United States accounts for approximately 40% of global arms exports. Its customers include regimes that would fail every human rights standard the State Department applies to countries it wants to sanction.

In debt architecture? The IMF and World Bank, institutions built in America’s image and operated according to American priorities, have spent sixty years attaching structural adjustment conditions to loans that forced developing countries to privatize public assets, cut social spending, and open their markets, while the countries that designed those conditions maintained their own subsidies, their own protections, their own agricultural supports.

In media? Five corporations control the majority of what the English-speaking world consumes as news. They share boards with defense contractors, with financial institutions, with the pharmaceutical industry.

They do not represent a free press.

They represent the most concentrated information architecture in human history dressed as pluralism.

Leadership.

The word is doing a great deal of quiet work in that sentence.
