On July 22, 2026, the Abiy regime carried out a drone strike targeting St. Arsema Monastery, located near the Abay Bridge in the Mekane Selam area of Amhara Region. According to reports from the ground, the strike killed multiple monks and nuns, and caused extensive damage to the monastery.

The monastery, a religious site, was struck during the afternoon. In addition to the casualties, the attack destroyed monastery property and infrastructure.

Seven Christian monks were killed by drone strikes from the Abiy Ahmed regime in Ethiopia. Ten others were critically injured. A monastery was struck during the Divine Liturgy.

This was an attack on Christians at worship.

The victims were gathered in prayer at St. Arsema Monastery under the South Wollo Diocese of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church when the attack occurred. No one should fear death for gathering in a sacred place to worship God.

The international community must condemn attacks on places of worship and demand accountability.
