Microsoft Clarity looked at 5.2M AI-agent sessions (OpenAI, Google and Anthropic agents, Aug 13–Sep 9): 25.21% recorded a checkout step, vs 14.65% of human sessions. Agent sessions grew 88% in three weeks.
If an agent can't read your price, stock or shipping, it moves on.
@cyrilchandelier@FirstIndexHQ Big jump. Did the named picks move too, or only the links? For local stores AI Mode leans on very few names: Boston pet food (Oct 30), Polkadog Bakery came up in 26 of 30 answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode; only 14 of 48 stores made 2 or more.
@JulienReutin In practice the set is tiny. Denver coffee (Oct 29), 10 shopper questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode: Huckleberry Roasters came up in 26 of 30 answers, Corvus in 25, and only 12 of 67 local roasters made 2 or more. Which signals do you see separating them?
@EntrepreneurDB Once the AI answer shows, the shelf gets short too. Chicago candles (Oct 29): 10 shopper questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode. Edgewater Candles came up in 22 of 30 answers; only 14 of 75 local candle shops made 2 or more. Seeing the same squeeze on "best X for Y"?
@MarcoKelly_23 The catch for smaller shops: checkout only helps if the assistant names you first. Columbus jewelry (Oct 30), 10 shopper questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode: Argo & Lehne came up in 20 of 30 answers; 27 of 69 local jewelers made 2 or more. Did it show any small brands?
@ntdillon That gap shows up in today's AI answers too: they lean on a few loud signals. Raleigh running shoes (Oct 30): Fleet Feet was named in 10 of 10 answers in each of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode. Would agent-collected reviews widen that list or just reinforce the leader?
@AlDev0@CyrusShepard Yes, and the default pick tends to be the same in every assistant. Raleigh (Oct 30): Fleet Feet was named in 10 of 10 answers in each of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode. Have you seen a store take that spot from a leader, or does it stick?
@alexgroberman Local answers bend that. Denver running stores, 10 shopper questions x 3 assistants (Oct 29): Runners Roost was named in 30 of 30 answers, Foot Locker in 5, REI and DICK'S in 2 each. The biggest domains didn't win the city question.
@gadimovtelman Which makes the unpaid name the one that matters. Raleigh running stores, 10 shopper questions (Oct 30): ChatGPT named Fleet Feet in all 10. The next store came up in 5 of 30 answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode.
@juokaz Same call had the other side: Shopify said orders from AI are up 3.3x year over year, and 74% of AI-attributed purchases came from outside its top 100 categories. Curious whether ads keep that long tail visible or push it down.
What it means for stores: up to four ads beside an answer that usually names only a few shops. In our Oct 30 Boston run, 8 of 63 running stores came up in 2 or more of 30 answers. https://t.co/TfgueE931s
@glenngabe Four ads next to a short organic list. Boston running stores, 10 shopper questions in AI Mode (Oct 30): Marathon Sports named in all 10, Heartbreak Hill in 7, Tracksmith in 5. Paid slots will sit right next to the stores the answer already favors.
@justinjacobsseo The leader tends to hold while the rest shuffle. Dallas running stores, 10 phrasings x 3 assistants (Oct 29): Fleet Feet in 30 of 30 answers, Luke's Locker in 21, Foot Locker in 9. One run can show a different #2 or #3.
@MarkoKrist Worth asking it the way a shopper would, without the business name. Minneapolis pet food, 10 shopper questions (Oct 30): Urban Tails was named in 30 of 30 answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode. Only 10 of 47 pet stores came up in 2 or more.
