According to the data provided by Connected Ball Technology housed within the @adidasfootball Trionda, the official match ball of the @FIFAWorldCup, it was proven that contact was made by Croatia's #20 Igor Matanović in the build up to the goal against Portugal, allowing the referee to correctly determine offside and disallow the goal.

IMU sensors housed within the Trionda ball are capable of determining any slight contact, displayed to viewers in the broadcast as a 'heartbeat graphic', and allowing officials an unprecedented level of data to make fast, accurate decisions.

El IFAB ha aprobado una aclaración del protocolo del árbitro asistente de vídeo (VAR) para su aplicación en la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026. Esta aclaración se refiere a infracciones claras cometidas por el equipo atacante antes de que el balón esté en juego en un saque de esquina o un tiro libre, que tengan un impacto directo en un gol, un penalti o una sanción disciplinaria.

Si la infracción cumple los criterios establecidos en la aclaración, el VAR recomendará una revisión en el terreno de juego («on-field review»). Si, tras la revisión, el árbitro determina que se produjo una infracción antes de que el balón estuviera en juego, se aplicará la sanción disciplinaria correspondiente y el saque de esquina o el tiro libre deberá repetirse.

La aclaración será revisada después de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026 antes de que se tome cualquier decisión sobre una posible aplicación más amplia.

The IFAB has approved a clarification to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocol for use at the 2026 FIFA World Cup regarding clear offences committed by the attacking team before the ball is in play at a corner kick or free kick that have a direct impact on a goal, penalty kick, or disciplinary sanction.

If the offence meets the criteria set out in the clarification, the VAR will recommend an on-field review, following which, if the referee determines that an offence occurred before the ball was in play, the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken and the corner kick or free kick will be retaken.

The clarification will be reviewed following the 2026 FIFA World Cup before any decision on its potential broader application is made.
