Countless kids were abused at Kincora Boys' Home in Belfast, with claims that MI5 British intelligence were also involved alongside high profile politicians.

Kincora was meant to be a safe home for vulnerable teenage boys. Instead it was run by three paedophiles. Joe Mains was the warden. Raymond Semple was his deputy. William McGrath was the housemaster. All three abused the boys in their care for years.

Journalist Chris Moore spent over four decades on this story, and his 2025 book "Kincora Britain's Shame" @MerrionPress alleges housemaster McGrath was an MI5 informant, kept in place to gather intelligence on a wider paedophile ring reaching into influential circles across Britain and Ireland.

The most explosive claim involves Lord Mountbatten, a member of the British Royal family. Three alleged victims told Moore they were taken from Kincora to Mountbatten's Classiebawn Castle in Mullaghmore in Sligo during the summer of 1977, where they say he raped them. We will visit the assassination of Mountbatten later in the DTM.

One man described being dropped off separately, taken to a boathouse, then returned to meet Mains for the journey home.Victims say they were silenced. One claims police warned him never to speak of it again.

The cover-up allegations run deep. Captain Brian Gemmell, an army intelligence officer, reported McGrath's abuse to MI5 in 1975. He says he was hauled in and ordered to drop the matter entirely. In 1983 the British government pulled back from launching a full judicial inquiry into Kincora, a decision Moore says MI5 engineered. He claims to have secret documents proving it and challenges the government to open an investigation.

The abuse became public in 1980. Mains, Semple and McGrath were convicted in 1981 for abusing 11 boys, though the real number of victims was likely far higher.
The 2017 Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry found no evidence of state collusion. Moore rejects that finding outright, pointing to government files on Kincora that remain sealed, some until 2065, others until 2085.
