@Carolyn_Ten @Bouquetin_Alpes @simongerman600 Perhaps you’re referencing the formal education and recording of French Sign Language? Sign languages have actually been around as long as deaf people have existed. It’s not universal for the same reasons that oral languages are not. I hope this helps!

Just like oral languages, sign languages are also not universal. Additionally, like other oral languages, ASL has different “accents” and local signs for different regions of the US
